Trump backed down

Given what a farce President Trump made of his effort to rig the Census in the GOP’s favor, it’s appropriate that it ends with Trump walking into the Rose Garden after meeting with a group of internet conspiracy theorists and cranks, then engaging in hollow bluster to obscure an obvious defeat.

In an announcement on Thursday afternoon, Trump backed down from his attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census.

Of course, Trump didn’t make it sound like he was backing down. He vowed that he will sign an “executive order" that will direct federal agencies to give the Commerce Department -- which oversees the Census -- records that will detail how many citizens and noncitizens live in the United States.

What that will mean is hard to say, but one thing it will notmean is that the citizenship question will be added to the Census. That’s a victory for the rule of law, since the whole point of adding it was to make the count less accurate, for naked political purposes.

The only point of it all was to help Republicans have more power. Power grab checked! Good work and good win for the good guys

It's a simple equation really...

If counting citizens would be politically beneficial for Republicans, then the inverse must also be true: not counting citizens would be politically beneficial to democrats. So why would counting actual citizens (as well as everyone else) be detrimental to the democrats unless they were in some way benefiting politically from illegals?

Once you realize that, the whole issue becomes a lot easier to grapple with in terms of how it impacts you and your life, politics aside.

Just follow the constitution. We Democrats accepted Trump is president even though more people voted for Clinton. Accept the fact the constitution recognizes people not just citizens

As Buffalo_Gal pointed out, the Constitution says that if you break the law you don't count.  I believe every illegal alien has done that. So yes please let's follow it.

"Section 2. Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State."

You can break the law and still retain several critical rights as a human being.

Yes, but electoral representation is not one of them.

You sound drunk or maybe just like Gleeful Gator has always sounded. Only citizens can vote and only citizens or legal residents should be counted for the purpose of representation. Counting illegal aliens only encourages more illegal aliens to settle in certain areas. Why should we give more voting power to municipalities that become sanctuaries for criminals?
