Bravo to the UN

Recommended Posts

I was thinking...with all of the good work that kofi and his friends at the UN have done with regards to protectiing the children in the congo, I suggest that they take charge of the state of Florida, and be put in charge of protecting the innocent children there. Does anyone else think that this would be a good idea?

if the UN undertakes this noble mission, there is only one man capable of protecting the children with the care and compassion of the UN...

Why isn't the US spreading democracy in the Congo?

Don't worry. Soon, the U.S. will need to go in and rescue the UN. The UN seems to have a habit of failing miserably in their tasks recently.

How much oil does the Congo produce?

Why does everyone on the left resort to the Blood for Oil argument?

It's so cliche and yet so uninformed. If we went into Iraq for oil, what benefits have we been reaping? All-time highest gas prices?

Blood for Oil argument = RJ

Because they can't come up with anything better?

Makes a pretty good soundbite for the Hot Pockets crowd?

It ties into the "Halliburton became eeeevil starting January 2001" stuff?

No way man. Those tankers full of all that free Iraqi oil that we're helping ourselves to are arriving in the US on a daily basis.

Why does everyone on the right assume that anyone that has an opinion other then theirs is on the left.

I could have just as easily wrote: what natural resource or strategic/political significance does the Congo have? Like it or not, contries get involved in other contries affairs primarily for some beneficial reason rather then just out of the goodness of their heart.

And no, those benefits might not trickle down to the general public.

What you may not know is that the Congo is INCREDIBLY mineral-rich. It's a huge supplier of ore and gems, not to mentuin Uranium.

So that kinda shoots that whole line of thinking out of the water.

Thank you! Finally a productive response. See, we all can learn something here rather then just bashing each other.

Now the ore and gems may not be enough for the US to care too much but the uranium could have political issues if the "wrong" people are in charge in the congo.

Perhaps the US military is too overburdened at the moment to be able to help out. Perhaps the civil war does not change any strategic issues (ex. both sides may be pro-US - or at least not anti-US). Sounds like the main issue the UN is dealing with is disease and hunger. Maybe more aid could be sent. The UN has 4k troop there, the African Union plans to send 7-10k troop soon.

None, but they also don't sponsor suicide bombers and launch scud missles at our allies, and use chemical weapons on their own people....

...and when is the last time someone from the Congo hijacked an American plane, or blew up our Marine barracks?

If countries like France are self-righteous, why don't they go do something?

Where are the protesters demanding a stop to the killings and rapes in the Congo?

Mr. Moore? Hollywood crowd? any one?

Perhaps they're busy penning "We Aren't the World."
