That I have to disagree with- I mean I am for capital punishment, but not torture- that doesn't benefit anyone.

On the contrary, I think it would send a clear message.

I'm for public stonings. Throw them in a hole they can't climb out of and let the entire community pelt him with rocks.

ever see video of public stonings in the middle east? gruesome stuff...i don't think i could participate unless it was personal to me

they bury you up to the waist (or maybe slightly higher because they don't want you to be able to keel over) in the ground, tie your hands up so you can't escape, then wrap you with white bedsheets...then people start going to town doing their best randy johnson impersonations...you see writing, blood staining through the sheets...and after an eternity it seems (i forget how long the video was), the body just goes limp...

a funny thought occured to me after the video was over...the crowd was stoning two criminals (who knows what they did) and they surrounded the two in a circle of people...i'm just wondering how they avoided pelting each other when they missed since directly beyond the guy being stoned, there's someone else chucking rocks as hard as they can...

Public execution and torture are 2 different things. the first can be effective in small doses, in large doses it merely becomes accepted, and loses its message

Or that she-male Anne Coultergeist. She was at UB last week and she was so hideous I wanted to spit on her.

Funny thing about Coulter is how she constantly tries to defend her ignorance in the face of what most people understand as the truth. Case in point, last month she was on a CBC news program discussing the right wing tilt of American news outlets and conservative bias in our media. The host asked her why she was constantly ridiculing and insulting Canada and she said she didn't always feel this way, especially when Canada sent thousands of troops to help us out in Viet Nam.

The announcer stared at her in stunned silence for a few moments and gently reminded her Canada didn't send any troops and was against the US's position in SE Asia. Coulter, clearly reeling, tried to defend her misstatement by saying she'd check into it and prove shes right.

Ah the genius of the consservative mind.

Here's what I found:

The Government of Canada did not send troops to Vietnam under the flag of Canada. If that's what Coulter was referring to, well, she is clearly wrong. However, she may be thinking of the same thing I did, because many Canadians did go fight in Vietnam, with the blessing of Canada under the flag of the US. When I say many, I am talking in excess of 30,000 troops. In fact, Canada was in the process of downsizing her military at the time from the all time high numbers they held during WWII. Many of their soldiers were allowed to join the US military as Canadian citizens and were allowed to return after their tour was over. Throughout our shared histories, Canadians and Americans have fought shoulder to shoulder in so many battles, at least 24 Canadians have been awarded the United States Medal of Honor, including Sgt. Peter C. Lemon for his heroic actions in Vietnam. Additionally, six Canadians are still listed as MIA’s from the Vietnam conflict, although it is speculated that they have died as or still remain POW's.

You were saying?

The benefit is in the impact on the scumbag who deserves it. These people should be suffering significantly MORE than did their innocent victims. If they didn't show any mercy or abide by any 'cruel and unusual' standards, then they shouldn't benefit from them either. I would have no problem with the Mid-East style stoning described above for this child molester/murderer.

And I love how people say harsh/capital punishment is not a deterrent. How would they know if it has never been widely used in this country? Obviously executing a handful of guys in Texas each year isn't going to make anyone think twice, but if we executed murderers by the thousands they sure as hell would.
