The Real Buffalo Joe Posted December 18, 2018 Posted December 18, 2018 So I saw that a few months ago, the NFL just allowed people who own other pro sports teams to own NFL teams. While that's great, how the hell have the Pegulas (who also own the Sabres (of the NHL)), pulled a fast one on Greedy Roger and friends? I don't know the details of the new rule, but hopefully it's backdated, otherwise we're in real trouble. 3
ocemur Posted December 18, 2018 Posted December 18, 2018 It wasn't a secret when the Pegulas were negotiating the purchase. I'm thinking a check for 1.4 Billion smoothed things over. 2 2
Logic Posted December 18, 2018 Posted December 18, 2018 I was under the impression that you couldn't own other sports teams IN OTHER MARKETS, but that it was permissable to own multiple teams in the same city/market. I could be way off base here. 14
The Wiz Posted December 18, 2018 Posted December 18, 2018 The real question is are they allowed to own the bandits and the bills? 2

I feel like there is a short list of things 1.4 billlion doesn’t buy.... and it’s on the order of large multinational corporations and larger countries.
JoPar_v2 Posted December 18, 2018 Posted December 18, 2018 (edited) I think the rule was you could not own a non-football franchise in a different market that also had an NFL team. Owner of the Rams was in that situation since he owned the Rams in St. Louis/LA but also owned a hockey team or something in Denver (which has the Broncos.) Same city was always okay, however. EDIT: From the NYT: "the owners extended by one year the deadline for Stan Kroenke, owner of the St. Louis Rams, to sell his stakes in the Denver Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets. When Kroenke bought a majority share of the Rams in 2010, he was given four years to sell his teams in Denver because they violated the league’s rules that prohibit owning teams in other cities where the N.F.L. also has a team." https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/09/sports/football/kim-and-terry-pegula-approved-as-owners-of-buffalo-bills.html Edited December 18, 2018 by JoPar_v2 2
Rochesterfan Posted December 18, 2018 Posted December 18, 2018 (edited) Go and find any of a ton of threads on this. The NFL allowed dual ownership as long as they were in the same market or another market without an NFL team. The Pegulas were fine and never an issue. It would have been an issue if the owners of Delaware North would have tried to buy the Bills because he is a part owner of the Boston Bruins. The change is to allow guys in specific situations to dual own even if the market is shared with an NFL team. The Rams owner is also a partial owner of the Colorado avalanche. This is to allow him to consolidate so no one forces him out over a control issue. Edited December 18, 2018 by Rochesterfan 2
ProcessYaDigg Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 Right or wrong, who the hell cares. The Bills get to stay in Buffalo!!! 3

BUFFALOKIE Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 This question was quite a good meme back when "El Pugal" first bought the team. 1

The old rule allowed it if the teams were in the same city. The new rule removes this as a requirement.

My understanding that an owner could own franchises in two different sports if it was in the same city. That has been permissible for a while.

thebandit27 Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 The answer is, was, and always will be: VIVA EL PEGUAL!!! 2
BillnutinHouston Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 Great, more dual ownership jokes. They never get old! 1
