Btw, I don't think many of you have watched SNL in decades. All good answers above, but Keenan Thompson has been on for 16 years and carries the show most weeks with his stellar array of impersonations and recurring characters. He deserves to be in the top 4 all-time.

he has some great gimmicks but he's always the same persona no matter what he does

he's not within a million miles of cracking the top 4 to someone who watched it from the first episode, about 98% of the time through 1990, and on and off since

Akroyd.

Carvey.

Hartman.

Murphy.

Runner up: Belushi.

SNL the last 25 years other than Hartman doing Clinton was pretty poor.  A reason that aliens will use to deem Earth as undeserving to survive.

I wonder if the results might also vary if you specify only based on their SNL skits and time there and not anything they did outside of it.

Including outside stuff might change your opinion because you like them because of their other stuff.

Cant believe Keenan has been on for 16 years, knew it's been a while but not that long. Doesnt necessarily mean it's a good thing though.

Same.

Take Will Ferrell & Dan Carvey out though?

Mix and/or match... Put in Jane "you ignorant slut" Curtin/Gilda Radner.

But, that might be too heavy old school?

Think we need to break out the jackhammer, and start looking a little to the right and a little to the left. I don’t see how to narrow this down to four.

Darrell Hammond -- unbelievably talented;  his range of characters is unparalleled on the show.  The Clinton/Gore years were hilarious.

Norm McDonald -- too irreverent even for the show that supposedly prides itself on being just that;  his Weekend Update will never be approached, much less passed.

Will Ferrell -- great 4-minute sketch comedian (but yes, still intolerable in any movie);  you can't ignore his longevity and many good characters.

Phil Hartman -- his Frank Sinatra might be the funniest character ever

Dana Carvey, Victoria Jackson, Ana Gasteyer, Chris Rock and Mike Meyers for honorable mention.

Need some kind of vote off the island bracke thing where you start with some even power of 2 actors and each vote you one off.  The trouble is coming up with the list so two greats are not paired off against each other early.

How or why would you want to bother with someone who announces Keenan was the best ever

Who is Keenan...we still need a bigger mountain.

This just goes to show, we have better comedians than Presidents.
