Buffalo Bills 20, Detroit Lions 16

1 p.m. ET (FOX) | New Era Field (Orchard Park, N.Y.)

Oh, boy. You want to write this blurb? This looks like a tough watch for anyone who's not a Lions or Billsfan -- I'm not sure even the members of those fan bases want to read the following. Detroit rode its defense to a win last week. Now that's a surprising sentence if you've followed this team through the years. Actually, though, that side of the ball has performed better than the offense overall this season. Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter is under fire in Detroit, as the Lions have limped to 20.8 points per game, 25th in the league. (Don't forget that part of their scintillating point total of 17 in Arizona was delivered by cornerback Darius Slay on a pick-six.) The Bills' defense has been a strong point for much of the year, often left on the field by an offense that is even worse than Detroit's. Sean McDermott's fellas feast off turnovers and sacks -- though unlike in 2017, Buffalo's defense hasn't manufactured enough to compensate for the sluggish offense. Think the Bills will force two to three giveaways from Matthew Stafford this week and pull to 5-9.

Lions (5-8) at Bills (4-9): 1 p.m. ET, Fox

Point spread: BUF -2.5 Matchup quality: 15.3 (of 100)

Michael Rothstein's pick: Somehow, the Lions are still in contention for a playoff berth, and winning in Buffalo would keep the franchise's postseason hopes alive for at least one more week. Yes, the offense is incredibly beat up, but the defense has improved over the past month, holding three of their past four opponents under 25 points. It will help that Buffalo has the second-worst offense in the league in yards and points scored. That should be enough for the Lions to win their second straight yawnfest. Lions 20, Bills 10

Mike Rodak's pick: The Bills are 4-0 this season when they have a positive turnover margin and 0-9 with an even or negative turnover margin, so it's no secret the Bills must protect the ball to beat the Lions. That is an attainable goal for Josh Allen, who will face a Detroit defense that is tied for second-fewest interceptions this season. Buffalo is 2-7 against defenses in the top half of the NFL in interceptions and 2-2 against teams, such as the Lions, in the bottom half. Bills 21, Lions 17

What's at stake: This matchup features two teams that FPI projects to capture top-10 picks in the 2019 draft. Proceed accordingly. -- Seifert

FPI win projection: BUF, 55.0 percent. In the three games since the Bills' bye week, Allen ranks sixth in the NFL with a 79.7 Total QBR. A large portion of that is due to his rushing ability. Allen has added 18.7 expected points on the ground in the past three weeks, more than three times as many as any other QB in that span.

Lions at Bills

MDS’s take: The Lions’ offense has struggled to complete anything downfield, and the Bills’ defense is strong. I think Buffalo wins a low-scoring game.

MDS’s pick: Bills 14, Lions 13.

Florio’s take: Matt Patricia finishes 3-1 against the division he spent years competing in.

Florio’s pick: Lions 24, Bills 21.

DETROIT AT BUFFALO, SUNDAY, 1 P.M. EST

(CTV Toronto-Kitchener-Northern Ontario; via FOX)

KRYK PICK: Buffalo

Lions QB Matthew Stafford hasn’t missed a start since 2010. But his back was especially sore this week and he’s questionable. Detroit lost its only other cold-weather outdoor game, at Chicago.

Who else thinks our red jerseys look so much better with white pants?

I do. I’ve been calling for that as an alternate for a couple years now.

...audition time for Ford.....kid looked pretty good n pre-season........add in Murphy & Ivory.........why even bother with Shady at this juncture?...our only hope to get to 5-9 versus "slipping" to 4-10?......oh wait, McBeane said, "he is in our plans for 2019"......perhaps he left out...."so far"....or..."releases".........is he worth another $6 mil next year?.......

Joe B: 5 things to watch for in Bills vs. Lions

gettyimages-1067727472.jpg

(WKBW) — For the first time in several years, the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions did not face off against one another in the preseason in 2018. Fittingly, though, as one team is eliminated from playoff contention while the other awaits their likely inevitability, a mid-December showdown awaits to reconjure the rivalry.

Above all else, the upcoming Bills-Lions matchup is a swing game for draft order angling. If the Bills lose, with a game against the New England Patriots on the docket, that will lock them into 11 losses at least, which in this year's standings would be a pretty solid bet to be drafting either in or very close to the Top Five. If the Bills win, it puts a six-win season on the table for them, which would most likely drop them into the bottom part of the Top 10, or quite possibly out of it all together.

However, what should you be looking for from a Bills perspective heading into the game? Five things to watch for in Bills vs. Lions:

1) Allen's bounce-back game?
2) McCoy's availability -- but does it matter?
3) A shift at tight end?
4) The plan to replace Milano
5) The offensive line remains the same -- for now

Injury Report

Buffalo
OUT: CB Ryan Lewis (concussion)
QUESTIONABLE: K Stephen Hauschka (right hip), RB Chris Ivory (shoulder), RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring), TE Logan Thomas (hamstring)

QUESTIONABLE: LB Trevor Bates (ankle), RB Nick Bellore (ankle), CB Marcus Cooper (back), T Taylor Decker (shoulder), LB Devon Kennard (hip), QB Matthew Stafford (back)

Bills Projected Inactives: QB Derek Anderson, RB Keith Ford, WR Da'Mari Scott, TE Logan Thomas, G Vladimir Ducasse, DE Mike Love, CB Ryan Lewis

Prediction: Bills over Lions

ORCHARD PARK — Nothing has changed from last week to this week, and nothing will change next week or the week after as the Buffalo Bills close out the 2018 season.

Sure, winning would be nice, and the Bills are actually favored for the second week in a row as underachieving Detroit comes to New Era Field Sunday trying to keep its microscopic playoff hopes alive.

However, whether the Bills win their last three games or lose all three, player evaluation remains the No. 1 priority because it’s still all about determining who has a future in Buffalo, and who doesn’t.

“We’ve eliminated ourselves from the playoffs, but there’s a bigger purpose,” said coach Sean McDermott when asked what his team has left to play for. “The bigger purpose is how we develop into that team that we’re trying to become. I’m really looking at the quality of our play and how we develop. Certainly, we want to win games, don’t get me wrong. We’re trying to sustain success over the course of time. That’s what we want to do, that’s how you win a world championship. In order to get there, though, there’s evaluating our roster, knowing who we like, who can help us moving forward and who may not have taken advantage of the opportunity, quite frankly.”
