Interesting, I do not work for a Union, but if my company asks me to work when I scheduled vacation, they reimburse me for any cancellation expense involved. So what is it that you got that I don't?

I agree mine does as well. In fact last year when we were doing some work on a contract proposal one of my coworkers had to cancel his cruise with his wife and two kids. The company reimbursed him, and then they paid for his cruise two months later upgrading his cabin. So he got a free family cruise with an upgrade just to hold off for a couple months. And my company is a bunch of cheap bastards.

Protection, representation etc. etc..... You would really have to compare his union contract to what your company offers to find exactly what he has that you don't... It's funny how many people look down on unions when they've never had the privelege of belonging to one or if they have, they paint them with a broad brush that says 'all unions are bad'. It's just simple ignorance.
