How do you feel about the Bills overall QB situation today?

Sure there will be bumps this year and the train may come off the rails but how can you not be excited by the glimpses this kid is showing. I love the cannon arm and his self confidence. Being doubted and having to earn every opportunity ever since high school should really help him if he struggles early in his career. I'm excited with the way he slings the ball. There were a couple of throws where the velocity was simply extraordinary.

I dislike the text surrounding cautiously optimistic, but that is where I am. I've seen progress from Allen and leadership, but still a ways to go.

We're OK right now.  Not great, but OK.  Allen should continue to develop, and Barkely is probably as reasonable a backup choice as any other guy available.

Josh Allen is good and is worth what we paid to get him.

 

It's not too early to tell that Josh Allen:

 

- has elite athletic ability that goes beyond his arm strength - his overall athleticism was underplayed because all anyone saw was the cannon arm - it is much better than many pundits realized.

- loves football the way you would want your franchise QB to love it.

- connects with his teammates and the fans

- does not have the fundamental accuracy issues that many claimed he did. He needs to grow in experience, touch, timing, but that is different than basic inaccuracy.

 

He is probably 20% as good as he is going to be. It's too early to tell what his exact upside is, although personally I think it is in the stratosphere. But he is giving the team a chance to win with a mediocre supporting cast as a rookie. They are 3-2 in his starts, 1-4 without him, and the result of the Texans game is probably 50/50 had he stayed healthy.

This is basically my view.  We got the right guy.  I think Allen will be the Bills QB for the next decade+.

 

I’m so glad he is getting all of the experience and reps this season.  The Bills have the cap money and picks to build an outstanding o line next year, and add better receivers.  With the defense already playing lights out, it’s exciting to think of how good we could be next year.

You won't see any possible gaudy numbers until he starts throwing around 35 times per game.  That's around Matt Stafford attempts per game right now.

Big Ben is averaging 41 pass attempts per game right now LOL.

If you weren't excited about the possibilities with a guy like Allen under center after watching the game yesterday, I dont know what to tell ya.

Wanted us to draft Allen, stand by that. Better than Sam Darnold and Lamar Jackson. Bills made the right pick. Barkley is the perfect mentor for Allen.

Allen remains a question mark.  He can make all the throws a NFL QB is supposed to make  - but can he make them on a consistent basis?    Can he read coverages as well as he should?  Can he learn to make quicker decisions?   Can he develop a better sense of when to slide in the pocket and when to tuck and run?  

 

I'm hopeful but not yet convinced.

I'm encouraged by Josh. He's going to be around for five years at least barring major injury imo because he is always going to have wow plays. 

 

Barkley is a terrible backup despite the Jets game, although there aren't many even decent backups in the league. Not sure Anderson will want to play next year.

 

So overall it's pretty good because we MAY have a star.

Not every incompletion is a drop. It's the same argument people made about his college stats even though that team also rated as one of the best for dropped passes. His ball placement is just not great and he has a tendency to throw as fast as he can when he doesn't need to. I thought he had a pretty good game though even if he is running a little more than I would like. I just can't stand these false narratives.

If Allen can run for 100+, the Dolphins will have to put a spy on him which is really going to open the field even more. If they drop the spy then the running lanes open back up.

Dropped passes is somewhat of a stupid and even useless stat unless you see about 25 clips of what the Drop Analyst calls a Drop and Not a Drop. I would argue that no more than 25% of "drops" are clear drops and all others are arguable drops, including and especially plays that the pass was tipped right before it gets there, plays where the defender tomahawks the ball as soon as it hits the WRs hands, plays where it would be a spectacular catch if he's makes it but got two hands on it, plays where it is behind and low over the middle, etc.

Allen is a gamer and should continue to improve.  He still has a lot to learn and work on.

 

Barkley is a much more capable backup than what we have had in awhile (Peterman, Manual, etc). 

 

I would not mind drafting another prospect for the PS next year.

The biggest dud of the year is this wasn’t the scenario week 1. Anderson should of been in camp in preseason. The worst mistake was not having a capable experienced backup around before week 1. 

We can all agree Anderson isn’t all that great. However Allen needed someone who knows how to prepare nfl style. 

Not sure we all get how much prep goes into a game. From walkthrough to practice to film to travel accommodations etc etc... That’s a lot to take in as a rookie let alone a first round quarterback with the weight of a responsibility to lead this dumpster fire of a team (since Kelly retired) 

With that said, I am more than happy with the 3 guys on the roster.. And feeling more and more comfortable that out of the 5 quarterbacks drafted ours looks like the only one capable of reaching “elite” status. 

The other 4 have tools, Mayfield looks the best right now, my opinion this is his ceiling though. Allen has been the most exciting to watch by far and has made a few throws that only maybe 2-3 other guys can make. 

Lot of work to reach a finished product but what he’s shown so far says he’s got a serious chance to reach that potential people seen.
