Yeah, I'm not so sure that we're behind at this point. There is a trend, though.

Step 1: Acquire a rookie QB

Step 1a: Ditch your head coach for an up and coming OC

Step 2: Surround your Rookie QB with lots of talent

You saw it in Philly (Hire Pederson, Draft Wentz, Year 2 Acquire Alshon Jeffrey, Torrey Smith, Chance Warmack, LeGarrette Blount)

And in LA (Draft Goff, Hire McVay, Acquire Robert Woods, Sammy Watkins, Cooper Kupp, Gerald Everett)

And in Chicago (Draft Trubisky, Hire Nagy, Acquire Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Trey Burton, Earl Watford, James Daniels, Anthony Miller)

KC is kind of the exception. They put the pieces in place and then installed the QB last. And they kept their HC.

“Around a competent rookie QB”

Mayfield is the highest rated rookie and he’s still ranked 26th in the league. No one is a sure bet competent QB.

You act like this is the easy part.

You’re literally basing your “trend” off of Mahomes and Goff.

Also neither is a rookie, and Mahomes had talent already there before him in Hunt and Hill along with Kielce.  They didn’t go out and get them afterwards.

It has to start somewhere....

I’m talking about eagles, rams, redskins, Seahawks, and the browns don’t need as much time to develop mayfield. The browns could be the eagles with wentz in his second year

So did we, we fired Rex Ryan.

Exactly.   We have the front office, scouting and coaching in place, now the cap is clear and McBeanes are smart enough to use the draft to build young, cheap talented starters, adding vet talent in FA.  I totally get where this franchise is going.   How they found and then worked in guys like Johnson, Teller, MIlano, is nothing short of solid roster building at extremely low cost.   Trust it.  They know what they are doing and are sticking to the plan.  I see a 4-2 finish or better this year.

The new trend in the NFL, and recipe for success. Is to stack your roster around a competent rookie QB. It allows you to spend money on key pieces and spread the wealth throughout the roster while your QB is in a rookie contract. It is clearly a new formula that has worked good for the teams who’s rookie QB has played well. We have wasted atleast a year or 2 of these prime years due to the fact that Allen is so raw. He won’t be ready to lead this team to a super bowl until his rookie contract is up and if he does become great his contract will then end up taking up the money needed to build such a stacked roster. Not saying we can’t end up building a young team through the draft but we lost the opportunity to follow the trend of a lot of successful teams.

New Orleans has really screwed this one up as well
