Former LB Little dies at 46

PITTSBURGH (AP) — David Little, a durable linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers who was voted to the Pro Bowl in 1990, died while weightlifting at home in Miami. He was 46.

Little had heart disease, and a cardiac fluttering Thursday caused him to drop on his chest 250 pounds of weights, which rolled onto his neck and suffocated him, the coroner said Tuesday. Little was found by his sons, David Jr. and Darien.

Little played his entire 12-year career in Pittsburgh after he was drafted out of Florida in the seventh round in 1981. He started 125 of the 179 games he played for the Steelers and once played in 89 in a row. His last season in the league was 1992.

His older brother, Larry Little, was an All-Pro guard for the Miami Dolphins.

Little is also survived by his wife, Denise, his mother, daughter and four sisters.

That's horrible. When you benchpress, don't put locks on the ends of the bars, you can just lean right/left to dump the weights if need be. Don't know if that necessarily would've helped him in that situation, but you really should always have a spotter when you lift.

RIP... Why can't stuff like that happen to the a$$holes instead of the good ones...?  ;)

I did this once! I was alone in a weightroom and I couldn't get the bar off my chest...luckily I was able to roll it down my chest to my waist and lift it off that way. I had a bruise that went down entire chest from it.

Just imagine if you had put some weights on the bar.

As far as natural selection goes: at least he passed along his genes.

Use spotters and/or cage, boys.

I'm thinking that there was some other cause. Little was an experienced man when it came to exercise regimens.
