PlayoffsPlease Posted October 15, 2018 Posted October 15, 2018 What percentage of passes in the NFL go to the first or second read? I am unable to find any information on this. There is a lot of criticism of young QBs about making poor decisions after making there first read, But watching other games yesterday, it seems to me that more than half of all passing plays go to the first read, and that 75% go to the first or second read. Does anyone know real statistics on this. I really don't trust my eyes to know.
DuckyBoys Posted October 15, 2018 Posted October 15, 2018 I would assume a very high % Especially the rhythm quick passing offenses
US Egg Posted October 15, 2018 Posted October 15, 2018 Surely there's some wannabe NFL Einstein in here who thinks they know the answer. 1
JoshAllenHasBigHands Posted October 15, 2018 Posted October 15, 2018 Super insightful question. Something that I think gets missed when fans take screen shots of passing plays and start circling open guys (which obviously is a dumb thing to do). The overwhelming majority of completed passes are based on the first read. Thing is, that happens because of pre-snap reads and guys knowing where the ball needs to go before the snap. 1
bills11 Posted October 15, 2018 Posted October 15, 2018 Alot..the objective of a play is to go to your primary read..at times the 2nd or 3rd read are routes designed to only to alter coverage to get the initial read open like when they send a player deep to clear out a safety to open up a crossing route

For example if Patrick Mahomes first read is wide open 75 of the time, he has an easy pass attempt. If Allen's first read is never open, then the time to read that is lost and I am pretty sure the second read pass is always more difficult. But i think comparing a QB stats who never has an open first read to someone whose first read is usually open would be tough.

So far, Mahomes and Josh Allen shouldn't be uttered in the same breath...... .....and probably will never be in a couple years, except by regretful Bills fans. But appreciate your insight.

ctk232 Posted October 15, 2018 Posted October 15, 2018 (edited) Without knowing the play calls and audibles even, there's no way to really tell. You'd likely need the Bills to publish their playbook and hot routes, or an annotated all-22 review by the coaching staff. You can guesstimate using footage though, if you understand route concepts and our offense. 41 minutes ago, PlayoffsPlease said: So your saying have Benjamin Jones and Clay coached by McDermott is just like having Reid coaching and Hill, Kelce and Watkins as targets. Much appreciated. They were never the same, nor will they ever be, and the Bills and Bills staff are not the Chiefs and company. They shouldn't be compared, and I'm tired of hearing about us passing up on Mahomes, so did every other team prior to the pick. Edited October 15, 2018 by ctk232
