She is right. You have to start somewhere. My issue is with why start at all?  Why is no one asking why is it so important to forgive student debt?  So people will have more disposable income to bolster the economy?  If so fair enough. But I’d rather they go after the “university industrial complex”. Oh wait. That would hurt her liberal brethren. Never mind.

She’s a campaign-trail, pandering liar.

This episode with the guy who did the right thing is meaningless.

She is never, ever going to pass this proposal. It is a fiction. The only real issue here is that people believe that this is a serious proposal.

And you’re right. She’d win a ton of credibility with me if she called for investigations into exactly where the tuition money goes (public schools and private schools). It’s like Obama’s ACA going after health insurance and completely ignoring the reasons why health care costs so much in the first place. Why not do both?

We had a pretty thorough discussion about this in another thread where the root of the student debt crisis that accelerated after the '08 crash was a racket scheme created by the federal government and the banks that give low interest rate student loans to those who don't deserve them.  Yes, one of the arguments of forgiving student debt is for disposable income to bolster the economy.  My proposed solution was to loosen the bankruptcy rules so you should be able to declare bankruptcy from student debt in the same way you can for credit cards.  It didn't gain much traction in this mostly conservative forum but it's better than just pure forgiveness of loans.  We talked about more transitional resources into high school that gives kids a more realistic aspect of the best career options moving forward instead of going into a liberal arts program in college that you'll never use.

It's a shock that lending 10's of thousands of dollars to 18 year olds with little or no income or collateral would result in a high default rate.  In any other circle than government, this would be called predatory lending.  It's a program that needs to be ended.  The old way where parents co-signed loans and loans were limited in value was more responsible.  Since states run many of the colleges and universities, let them figure out how to make it more affordable for their residents.  College expenses should be 100% tax deductible regardless of income (with some limits) and at the very most, the Fed gov IMO should block grant states and let them allocate the funds for grants, etc... and encourage private scholarship programs.

It is still possible for people (who are determined) to work their way through college if living at home, using some online courses and taking modest loans in many states.  It's tough but it can be done.

As for the loans on the books, much of that was foolish lending with little or no chance it gets repaid.  As much as I hate the idea, something will have to be done to clean it up or partially clean it up, but the debtors need to have some skin in the game.

Why stop with college loans?

Lets hear it for wiping out ALL debt.
We all deserve a loan-free car, houses, healthcare insurance, phones, vacations, credit card balances, boat loans, etc.

The only reason I pay any attention to the Dem debates is to learn what the new “free stuff” of the day that they’re offering.

Trent England: Elizabeth Warren wants to nullify the Electoral College -- and silence Middle America

By Trent England | Fox News

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., talks about her Oklahoma roots but rejected them long ago. She settled in Massachusetts, the state that made her its junior senator in 2012. Now Warren wants to be president and, along with many of her fellow Democrats, she’s calling for an end the Electoral College.

This makes sense. The Electoral College sets a high bar that irks politicians whose base is in the big cities. But this is by design. Right from the beginning, one reason for the Electoral College was to check the power of big cities and to require some geographic balance in our politics.

Maybe she needs to make another absurd video to show us that she's just a normal person who awkwardly sips a beer. Perhaps while walking the dog they got to make her more relatable.

Four new polls of Iowa and New Hampshire: Bernie, Bernie, Bernie, Bernie

by Allahpundit

Original Article

Democrats are really gonna do this, huh? I’m imagining Barack Obama looking at these new polling numbers and contemplating his legacy: A wipeout of Democrats in federal and state races by 2016, the election of a Republican president whom O himself allegedly describes as a “fascist,” and the increasing likelihood that his own party will choose an out-and-out socialist as its next nominee. In time, the Obama/Romney contest of 2012 may come to be seen as the last non-“European” election America had for many years. The well-respected NYT/Siena poll finds that everything’s coming up Bernie in Iowa

I had a dream, a dream about you baby
It's gonna come true baby
They think that he's through, but baby

You'll be swell, you'll be great
Gonna have the everything free on a plate
Starting here, starting now
Honey everything's coming up Bernie

Shoot your decks, show you tracks
You've got nothing to do but be taxed
Blow a Cis, take a bone
Honey everything's coming up Bernie

Now's your inning, it's time to drink a beer
MSM gets it spinning, that's just the beginning
Curtain up, start the fights
You got nothing to get but the blights

He'll be swell, you'll be great
I can tell, just you wait
That lucky star he talks about is due
Honey everything's coming up Bernie for commies and for you

He can do it, all he needs is a hand
We can do it, mama is gonna see to it
Curtain up, light the lights
We got nothing to get but the blights

He can tell, wait for the scam

There's the bell, follow him
And nothing's gonna stop you 'til he's through
Honey everything's coming up Bernie and daffodils

Everything's coming up Unicorns and Santa Claus
Everything's gonna be bright lights and lollipops
Everything's coming up Bernie for commies and for you

"For some Democrats, it’s a scenario they say they’ve dreaded and feared: waking up to the reality that the 78-year-old Vermont senator, an independent who has reshaped party policy and promised to bring a revolution to Washington, has a real shot..."

"... at capturing the nomination. For the Sanders campaign, it’s been part rallying cry, part admonition: At events across Iowa this weekend, the candidate and his top surrogates repeatedly warned of a coming fight with forces that would try to stop them, at points celebrating the clash, at points cautioning supporters to stay positive.... 'In these last eight days, things are gonna get crazy,' Ocasio-Cortez said on Sunday. 'I don't even know what's gonna happen. And that's why we've gotta stay focused and committed as possible. And let's make it joyous, y'all... Let's make it joyous.'... Michael Moore... told supporters, 'The knives are out. The rich woke up this morning, and they read these articles and they're like, "Oh no, oh no, what are we going to do?" So we'll see what they're going to do.'... The 11 candidates in the race have largely declined to attack Sanders directly...."
