An NPR/Ipsos poll in May 2018 found that 59 percent of teachers have worked a second job, 46 percent have incurred debt to meet expenses, and at least 8 in 10 have used their own money to buy school supplies.

This always kills me that teacher do this.  Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

I know they care about the kids and all, but why should schools get more money when the teachers will pick up the slack?

You think it's smart for teachers to take their own money out of their pocket to buy stuff the school should be paying for?

God bless 'em, but again I believe they're shooting themselves in the foot in regards to getting more money by doing this.

Teachers deserve more than they get, but they'll never get more so long as their unions ensure bad teachers always have a job.

A private company doesn't exist if it keeps poor performers on payroll. It doesn't exist if poor performers are guaranteed a salary with literally no fear of being fired after working for a set number of years. And it absolutely will NEVER, EVER exist if it reprimands bad employee behavior by making the employee sit in a room with a sofa, TV, and internet while collecting a full paycheck.

So let's stop the "teachers need to be paid more" crap until they get rid of teacher unions. Otherwise, they get what they deserve.

Tibs is an idiot, but he's not entirely wrong. The Federal government could conceivably fund a teacher pay increase through grants/reimbursements/etc. to the states. They cannot directly give the money to the teachers, but no state government is going to turn down free federal money to placate their teacher's unions.

No State would turn it down, but no Federal Administration should consider such cronyism unless they want every other group of "underappreciated civil servants" showing up with their demands.

This is purely political pandering in a sadly transparent effort to buy votes and endorsements, same with the reparation bullschiff.

Yes. This is 100% true.

Amazing how, so early in the process, the candidates are playing leapfrog to the left of each other.  Soon there's going to be nothing left to give away to voters.

Democrats are going to find out that nobody really cares about teachers "plight" as a campaign issue.

The majority of voters see them as having privliges they do not have - protected by a union, can strike if they don't like their pay and get to go back to work like nothing happened, work only 9 months a year at a desk job, etc.

IMO, the Democrats have just a few cards to play where they can outmaneuver Trump and the GOP - the cost of healthcare and the cost of college and the loan racket.  However, they'd be attacking Democrat pillars of Obamacare (can't admit it sorta sucks) and the higher education establishment (solid Democratic base).

The cost of healthcare should have been tackled long before health insurance was addressed.  The fact that neither party has chosen to do anything about it, and pay only lip service to the issue, should say everything about how little they want to make those changes.

Every private college trustee board should also be investigated as well.  There's no reason why the cost of higher education has skyrocketed out of line with the basic cost of living in this country.

It's simple, easy student loans and no financial savvy to realize that a four year degree and 100k + in debt can be paid off with a social service job paying 20k a year. Also, because they can.

Jurisdiction is the wrong term but I know what you are saying. Still, I'm sure they would have the power to add more money to teachers pay. If they can do a national minimum wage they can do this

They really only need one card and that's healthcare.  The GOP not repealing/replacing the ACA and now trying to kill the most popular aspect of it through the courts is a gift to Democrats.  Putting out a budget outline cutting entitlement money is a gift to Democrats.  They should ignore all the outside noise and run on only healthcare for the next year and a half.

The anti-American racist leftists morons (like Green, Tlaib, AOC, Omar..... on and on and on) won't stop with their impeachment crap.

Are they trying to get Americans to FULLY support Trump, because if they continue with their bullshyt, that is exactly what is going to happen.

If The President's approval rating goes over 50%, the Dumbs might as well not put up a candidate for 2020, as they will get crushed.

I don't know much about politics, but I ask this question...............

Do the Democrats even know how to govern or are they just in it for the power?

the spiraling cost of college and the associated skyrocketing in student debt has nothing to do with increased teacher pay, improved education, or preparing students for a high paying career and everything to do with increased salaries for administrators and high end secondary facilities like rec centers, dorms, crying rooms, and comfort puppies

I don't necessarily agree with this, because most Americans know that the FUBAR'ed state of American health insurance...which is really the issue here...came from Obamacare. They KNOW who made things this bad.

But even if I agreed with you, the odds of the Donner Party sticking to this card alone is a pipe dream. As long as the young guns keep getting the biggest mic linked to the biggest speaker, then it's open borders, late-term abortion, hate the Jews, socialism and Green Deal.

No one is leading. No one is driving the message. It's a Donner Party schittshow and if Pelosi can't get them to shut up -- which she can't -- then  it'll be up to the base to make these nuts go away. And that ain't happening either because, like I said, they have the biggest mics and speakers with the media in their corner and the Donner Party base LOVES the crazies.

I agree, but the easy student loan availability allows the colleges to fund their bloat, in spades.

Federal monies have POURED in to universities over the past several decades. This has been a major fuel to creating and fueling the voracious appetite for growth that these institutions have. They’re just like the central governments... it’s all Monopoly money to them. They pay no taxes on their endowment’s gains. Those are like Roth IRAs for them.

Hmmm healthcare, healthcare, healthcare.... watch Tucker Carlson's opening tonight. Healthcare was the signaled talking point from Nancy on Monday, and healthcare was the pivot Tuesday (and continued today) on CNN and MSNBC.

Apparently, some here got the message. <_<

Again we are in agreement

But who is at fault for the explosion in loan availability?  The Government for writing regulations that make it difficult to deny a loan to somebody who may not be able to repay it or the greedy capitalist pigs that demand repayment

The federal government took over the student loan business a few years ago (not greedy capitalist pigs). That government is making billions off the interest, all on the backs of gullible kids. If people thought predatory mortgages were bad; at least they were sold to adults!
