With Fall in full season we have seen the typical drop in overall box office numbers, but with October starting things will trend upward a bit before the Holiday Season begins next month. As always with this month there will be a few things out there to give thrills and chills and maybe a little fun. There will also be a bit of action to go along with that as well. Leading this month however, are two films that are generating a lot of Oscar buzz, and getting ahead start of all the other independent releases that tend to come out at the end of December. It will be a very diverse month.

Ryan Gosling stars in Universal's & Dreamworks' "First Man". A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Also starring Claire Foy, Jason Clarke & Kyle Chandler. Directed by Damien Chazelle.

Bradley Cooper directs & stars along with Lady Gaga in Warner Bros. & MGM's "A Star Is Born". A musician helps a young singer and actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. Also starring Sam Elliott & Greg Grunberg.

Tom Hardy is "Venom". When Eddie Brock acquires the powers of a symbiote, he will have to release his alter-ego "Venom" to save his life. Also starring Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, Marcella Bragio & Woody Harrelson.

20th Century Fox presents, "Bad Times At The El Royale". Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe's El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption - before everything goes to hell. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm & Jeff Bridges.

Jamie Lee Curtis stars in "Halloween". Laurie Strode comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago. Also starring Judy Greer, Andi Matichak & James Jude Courtney.

Jack Black stars in "Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween". Halloween comes to life in a comedy adventure based on R.L. Stine's 400-million-selling series of books. Also starring Wendi McLendon-Covey, Madison Iseman & Ken Jeong.

In "The Hate U Give", Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right. Starring Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby & Anthony Mackie.

In "Hunter Killer", An untested American submarine captain teams with U.S. Navy Seals to rescue the Russian president, who has been kidnapped by a rogue general. Starring Gerard Butler, Common, Ethan Baird, Jacob Scipio, Dempsey Bovell & Gary Oldman.

In "Suspiria", A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up. Starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, Doris Wick & Mia Goth.

"Indivisible" is the extraordinary true story of Army Chaplain Darren Turner and his wife Heather. When war etches battle scars on their hearts, they face one more battle: the fight to save their marriage. Starring Justin Breuning & Sarah Drew.

Finally, in "Johnny English Strikes Again", After a cyber-attack reveals the identity of all of the active undercover agents in Britain, Johnny English is forced to come out of retirement to find the mastermind hacker. Starring Rowan Atkinson, Olga Kurylenko, Charles Dance & Emma Thompson.

Johnny English?  I loved Mr. Bean, but I never saw any of these movies.  I had no idea it did well enough to get two sequels.

If video stores were still a thing, a lot of these movies would be straight to the shelves.

If Venom were made by the same crew that made Deadpool it'd destroy Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga at the box office.  Unfortunately, Venom suffers from the same pre-production issues that plagued the Predator movie.

Hunter/Killer is a great movie - with better actors and a better director.   Gerard Butler and Nicolas Cage should really do a movie together since they are hellbent on being in every movie ever made.

Straight to streaming is a thing...

You're right about Venom. I want to see Venom bite heads off. This movie should've been rated R.

Just got back from "A Star is Born."  Makes me curious to see the original.  Overall really good, but not sure how I feel about the ending.

Can Lady Gaga act?

The 1930s original?

This is the 4th time the movie's been made. ?

Yes it is surprising. Rowan Atkinson has a following, and these movies more likely don't cost a lot to make.

She was good. I think they tried to make her a little too Streisand at times. By the end, her character is a little Gaga too.

I actually had a harder time with Cooper as a musician.  The camera usually didn’t show him actually playing anything and his voice was okay

-  Potential spoiler alert  -

Without seeing the movie and from what I've read, I think that was the direction the movie wanted to take.  Her character starts in one direction then transitions to this pop-electro-diva which in the end signals her "downfall" by not staying with what got her there.

a 4th A Star is Born to watch, can't think of many other movies I will have seen 4 versions of the same story.

James and Judy was the best of the first 3, to me....

Yeah, not even close.  Not saying it to be a dick, but that’s not how that goes at all.

They modernized the movie, which I believe took them in the pop direction for her.  It seemed weird to have her so that from how she started, but that’s all

Venom was a fun movie.

It seems to be getting bad reviews, though.

Yeah it was in the 30's at Rotten Tomatoes. Not good, but is the movie critic proof?

Regarding Rotten Tomatoes, when the critic score and audience score are not aligned, I think something is not right.

Look at these recent examples to illustrate my point:

The Nun

Critics: 26

Audience: 42

Crazy Rich Asians

Critics: 92

Audience: 81

Venom

Critics: 31

Audience: 88

If you look at other super hero films for comparison, they all are pretty much aligned, good or bad.

The Predator is another film with a similar cult fanbase, but critics and audience were aligned.

The Star Wars films are also comparable and critics/audience are aligned on all of them except for The Last Jedi. In this case, it's the reverse scenario compared to Venom. The critics thought TLJ was great (91) while the audience didn't (45).

I'm not sure what to make of it, but it's interesting.

I enjoyed Venom too.   Tom Hardy was good as always, and it had some funny scenes but wasn't Marvel/Disney quipp filled nonsense.    Don't really see how making it rated R would have made it any better really.

I thought it was pretty bad. Someone behind us started clapping when it was over, and I wanted to throw something at him. A Star Is Born was OK, not great, but the Dolby experience was amazing. AMC A-List rocks, already got tix for Halloween in Dolby, just waiting now for First Man and Bohemian Rhapsody to become available and I’ll be set.
