30+ year old memories

Recommended Posts

This subject has obviously been in the news lately.  Do you have any that you recall in fear, guilt or happiness?  Any other emotion will do.

My example is one of guilt.  One day I was minding my own business having some coffee at a little cafe on Main Street when an ambulance went screaming by.  I was annoyed by the noise and was glad when it had past.  I went back to my coffee and my day without further thought.  Later I found out that in the ambulance was my Uncle Eugene.  He died on October the 2nd 1981.  It was 37 years ago today and I'll never forget it.  I still feel awful.  I think of Geno every time I have coffee.  I miss you dude.

Very few have their compassion working 24/7 like Mother Theresa did.  I think we all get annoyed at times without thinking what is going on with somebody else.  I get annoyed when somebody comes up fast behind me on I-90 and passes but who knows.  They could have received a call that a relative was rushed to a hospital and that person's life is in doubt.  In regards to what is going on with Kavanaugh I do think that the memory can get tricky when trying to recall that long ago for some.  Then there is the issue if the memory is stressful.  Somebody else could be the offender but when the big name you know is in the news the brain is seeking gratification so the pleasure impulse overrides the logic and rational aspect.

You're not the only one who lost their Uncle Geno on that day. "I Eat Crayonz", a former poster here who you may remember, was distraught here several years ago when discussing his bald headed uncle's demise.

I don't mean to be rude but let's try to keep Kavanagh in the Kavanagh thread.  This was meant for old memories.  Yes it may have been prompted by Kavanagh but it isn't meant to be political.  People of all stripes have regrets.

It it was really more of a question about old memories popping back up from time to time.  Happy old memories are welcome too!  October 2 is a tough day.

I have two clear Buffalo sports memories from the 1980's.

In 1981 playoffs the Bills visited Shay stadium and the New York Sack exchange. I was a big Bills fan at the time and Joe Ferguson was rolling early on hitting Jerry Butler (I think) and Frank Lewis all over and got them to a big lead. But then the Jets came roaring back. I was on my bed listening to Van Miller with these big headphones while the tv was on, too. Mark Gastinau and co. were crushing Ferguson and Wesley Walker started catching passes. The Jets QB Richard Todd drove them down the field late in the game and I was dying but Billy Simpson snagged the game sealing interception and I started yelling "get down, get down" and my brother was like, dude, chill out. Lol, good times!

But not as memorable as the May or June 1983 game seven playoff loss in OT to the Bruins. The game started while I was in class at Bennett and I had an earbud in during Biology class and this kid--I actually remember his name--was joking around pretending to talk to me but not saying anything, like i couldn't hear, lol. So I got home and Brad Park blasted home a slap shot past Bob Sauve and I just sat there and didn't move for like ten minutes I was so shocked.

I also clearly remember Doug Fluties hail Mary Throw to beat Kosar and Miami.

Great song from a great album by a great musician.

Well done.

I remember getting upset at the guy in front of me in a Dunkin Donuts drive thru. I found out he paid for my coffee. That's what took so long.

I have so much shame?

I'd have been pissed, too.  Idiot wasting my time doing something for me that I can do quicker myself.

That's not "nice."  It's not a "random act of kindness."  It's wasting my valuable !@#$ing time.

Now excuse me while I go post insults in six other threads...

30 years ago, I was driving a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado convertible. It was hot pink, with whale skin hubcaps, and all leather cow interior, and big brown baby seal eyes for head lights.

I drove in that baby at 115 miles per hour, getting 1 mile per gallon whilst sucking down Quarter Pounder cheeseburgers from McDonald's in the old fashioned non-biodegradable styrofoam containers. When I was done sucking down those greaseball burgers, I wiped my mouth with the American flag, and then I tossed the styrofoam containers right out the side.

I regret nothing.

But did you ever drive slow in the ultrafast lane, while people behind you were going insane?

The least you could have done was a link for the song you are referencing "I'm a a**hole".

Only when I was done with the greaseball burgers. I had to warm up for parking in handicapped spaces.

Or I could have left it up to people to get the reference themselves...

That reminded me....one time several friends and I went somewhere....don't remember where but we knew there would be a lot of traffic on the way home.  We had three cars, manuvered so one was in each lane of the highway 3 abreast and then slowed to 30 mph, maybe less. I was a passenger so I got to look back for reactions.  What I saw was not laughter and happiness at our inventive idea.

Man that was stupid and could have gotten someone hurt back in the crowd.  Some dude went onto the grass median and passed the car in the left lane.  We gave up but not right away.  I'd say about five minutes.  People were piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissssssssssssssssseddddddddddddddddd!!!  It was the truck behind the middle car that caused us to give up.  I think he was seriously about to hit ramming speed.

For some reason I got this done a couple of times to me in a few weeks. A few years back, this old man--probably a Trump supporter now--was just going 25 in a 35, not the biggest deal, so I just went along with it, no big deal, the road was splitting into two lanes so I waited and then I started to pass the moron and he cut me off! No biggie, I just tried to go back in other lane and sure enough he did it again! So traffic stopped and I slipped by him and just pulled up side and he's this old dude with this nice beagle dog with him and I roll down the window ready to answer back any old man crap he wanted to yap at me, but he just ignored me.

So then about two weeks later or something, this blue ford pick up just starts doing same thing, same place, but they are going real slow, I wanted to kill them! I finally got up beside them and its two kids from neighborhood I had known before. I just shook my head and drove on.
