major Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 As I’ve gotten older, I look back and appreciate former players and personnel more and more. One of those gems we had was John Butler. He haven’t had a good GM since him. Still amazed he never won a super bowl here or in San Diego. He also passed away way too young 1

Thurman#1 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 (edited) Very good with personnel evaluation. Absolutely horrible with handling the salary cap. Edited October 2, 2018 by Thurman#1 2
Pine Barrens Mafia Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 !@#$ John Butler. And !@#$ Ralph Wilson too. Wilson for going cheap on butler and butler for totally tanking his last draft because of it. I’ll never forgive either of them. Man Ralph was a steaming pile.
DRA3196 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 (edited) Butler didn't impress me as GM. When he took the entire Bills front office with him to SD, It set the franchise back 20yrs. He facilitated the Johnson/Flutie fiasco. His drafts were mediocre. Great person, ok personnel guy but he was limited as a business man. Edited October 2, 2018 by DRA3196
Corp000085 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 He was a great person. He hung out with me for about 15 minutes at the Marv Levy HOF ceremony. He got me a water cause it was so hot that day.
YoloinOhio Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 I thought you were referring to our new DB coach, John Butler. He’s doing a great job.

Completely agree with this. His problem was he loved every player way too much and would pay them whatever they wanted. In fairness the cap was still a fairly new thing, but he didn't handle it well at all. Edited October 2, 2018 by Ed_Formerly_of_Roch
row_33 Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 (edited) Butler just kept dragging in Flutie, which is admitting you have no serious playoff plans from Day One Edited October 2, 2018 by row_33
