Micah Hyde, PR

  1. 1. Should Micah Hyde be returning punts?

    • Yes, if he is clearly the best PR on the team
    • No, we can’t afford the extra injury risk

There was some discomfort in the GDT over Hyde returning punts in Minnesota. He has experience doing it, and we saw ray ray make a rookie mistake on his chance. Kerley was the PR before he got cut. Thoughts?

I think field position is monumental with our offense. So I’m on the fence. I know Hyde had a lot of success returning punts in GB and we are fairly deep at safety but the drop off from him to Bush isn’t good.

In my opinion you should never have a starter returning kicks or punts. It's a risky endeavor.

AB used to do it in Pittsburgh ... can’t remember if he still does

I liked that Powell dude a lot actually. Rarely made mistakes. Wasn't going to break out for a TD return, but got positive yardage and didn't do anything stupid. Was refreshing from Leodis days. Just want a dude like that.

Nope, should not be risking injury.  They need to find someone else.

just curious, how many punt returners get injured. I'm sure it's happened, but I can't recall.

As did Desean Jackson. AB did it last year (the kick in the punter's face lol), if the talent is that special then go for it. I don't think the risk reward is there with Hyde compared to AB or Desean Jackson lol.

I don't believe the incidence is high, but he's too valuable to the defense to be doing double duty at PR IMO.

and.. would he be that good to warrant it anyway?

I don't know, it's a couple plays a game. Mostly fair catches. And after he does return a kick, he has time to rest while the offense is on the field. If he's the best they have, it should be considered.

Winfield used to return punts and play starting CB.

I think it is okay for Defense players to return punts and Offense players to return kickoffs since each will get a rest after play.

career average of about 10 yards per return with 3 TD's.

It’s definitely a tough call.

Hyde seems very reliable returning punts but he’s such a valuable player of course.

But Murphy/Ray Ray have looked very sketchy so far.

So its a very tough call. I would give the slight edge to Hyde though.

Fair catch a lot of them and only return them when there is lots of room
