I dont think bell wants to play this year. He wants a large guaranteed contract before he retires not a one year franchise tag deal.

As said many times before, he will report in week 10 to get his accrued season and dissolve the tag for 2018,

A 3rd and shady.  3 years 45 mil.  40 guaranteed takes it down.  Out of the backfeild and between the tackles he is the best in the business.  All the cap space the next few years and Allen on his rookie deal, makes Buffalo a realistic player for him.

The way these kinds of trades usually work is the new team and player quietly work out a contract before the trade is announced

Agreed.

But my question was, is that possible in this specific case?

There is a deadline to negotiate a new deal for franchise tagged players. Once the deadline passes, a new deal can not be worked on until after the season is over.

Quote

The league-imposed deadline for the Pittsburgh Steelers to sign Le’Veon Bell to long-term contract passed on Monday at 4 p.m ET without any fanfare after both sides were once again unable to come to an agreement on a new deal. Adam Schefter of ESPN was one of the first to confirm the news via Twitter.

As per NFL rules, negotiations toward an extension cannot now resume until after the end of the regular season, assuming they ever do.

Bell will play under the franchise tag in 2018 and will earn a salary of $14.544 million this year.

If he is traded, can the new team negotiate an extension?

Or can he only play under the tag this season, no matter who he plays for?

Everyone against Bell has to be blind.

The guy is a force who knows what he’s worth.

Just like anyone else he's worth what someone wants to pay. We'll see what that is.

All Bell has to do is sign his franchise tender and report by Week 8 and he gets thst gusranteed money. He’ll report then and that’s why he’s okay losing game checks right now

That's ballsy then to say goodbye to 14 million. He will NEVER re-coop it.

Look at the Mack Deal or the the Donald deal.  Non-QB deals.  14 million is officially chump change to those two.

What if he doesn't? Does the current franchise tag slide? Ie the steelers dont have to re tag him, he is just under this current tag until he reports? Also what does this do to the steelers cap? Is his contract included?

(Not necessarily asking you/singling you out as I got 3 responses with the same message yours just happened to be the last one)

For him not to show would be ridiculously stupid on his part.  He'd have to sign the same franchise tender next year.  If the Steelers didn't let him go this year, they will never let him go next year.

Bell wouldn't accept a trade without a new deal being worked out.  He'd go Darwin Walker.

No deal can be made until after the season after Steelers do not franchise him a second time.  edit: team can negotiate a long term deal while on 2nd franchise tag again up to approx. July 15.

Once he was tagged and the deadline passed in July 15 he can not sign a new contract now. Can only sign the franchise tender and play this year for Steelers or team he is traded to.

If he holds out all year he is not a free agent next year either. That is why it is assumed he returns week 10, I think he needs 6 games to accrue enough games to have this year count towards free agency.

Shady and a 2020 3rd.

That would be beautiful.

Maybe he doesn’t fit “process” but it seems like a lot of this has been boiling in Pittsburgh for a while.

And while I don’t usually side with players in contract holdouts, Bell has earned a contract extension. And the problem is they should’ve done a 4 or 5 year deal 2 or 3 years ago. Now they’re less inclined to do so because he’s only gotten older. It’s not the worst thing for the Steelers because they’ve been able to keep him for his prime years. But at the same time, he’s one of the top 5-10 offensive non-qb weapons in the league.

This is a guy I would make a play for.

From, what some are saying. And Dan Patrick parroted this. He does not want a sign and trade. He would go to a team as a one year rental. No tag. in 19 and the ability to be a free agent next season.

He could go to the Jets if they tell his agent they will sign him long-term for whatever he would demand in FA. They have the cap space to do it. He could be back in green and white.

The end of the day you would hold the cards.  You could franchise him with the intentions of a long term deal.

I don’t think the Steelers want him back this year, they are getting great production out of Conner at a small fraction of the cost. Why pay 800,000$ a game when you can pay 600,000$ for a whole year of Conner. Don’t be shocked if they release him, even if it means losing out on a third round comp pick next year.
