I think part of the problem is that our defense has regressed and also isn't very good. These guys are also being evaluated in practice. They probably looks competent in practice due to the defense not being very good. And to be fair, Peterman did look much improved in the pre-season. I was surprised at how bad he played in the opener.

Thanks for playing Nate. Don Pardo has some nice partings gifts for you on the way out the door.

Nate, you've won a year's supply of Snickers bars.  Packed with peanuts, Snickers really satisfies.  And, Rice-a-roni, the San Francisco treat.  And from the makers of Johnson's Wax comes Turtle Wax, for that hard shell finish.  And Jello instant pudding, made with your own milk so you know it's wholesome.  Back to you, Johnny...

This is a good move. We don't know if it will workout for Josh but the way they handled this is better for Josh. The players will not think to bench Josh if he struggles because they know Peterman isn't good. If they started Josh game one and he struggled they'd always have to answer for Peterman being on the bench.

I'm so tired of hearing about this "awful line". Look around the league people - almost everyone's line is bad. Did you see Watson on Sunday?

Line play is at an all time worst league wide. It's not something that can be fixed this year. And probably only something that can be upgraded minimally next season.

Kid's gonna have to learn to overcome it. If we keep him on ice until the line is sufficient for all of you - he'll never see the field.

Everyone needs to step up..its not just the line.  Recievers need to catch ball and Daboll needs to come up with a gameplan knowing the teams weaknesses and how to get the most out of what hes got.

I think Peterman in practice and preseason is a completely different player than in regular season.  Peterman's abysmal game Sunday forced the Bill's hand on moving to Allen.

True but don't you think the coaching staff should have anticipated that?

I did and I am a just a fan. Peterman looks descent when there is no pressure, no game planning, no blitzing.

Put some heat on the guy and game plan for him and he is a complete joke. He has MASSIVE limitations.

It stuns me that Mcd and Daboll could not recognize that, and picked him to start based on meaningless pre season games

I understand all of the arguments for and against starting Allen. I understand wanting to get him experience, but also avoid starting him for sake of his mental stability behind this awful line. What I don't understand is how its all actually gone down with this coaching staff.

How can you come to the conclusion, after months of training camp, practices and pre-season that you want to start Peterman, and then after 1 half change your mind? How could an NFL coaching staff paid millions of dollars be so wrong about the analysis of how it was going to go. Of course the line will be awful when 3/5 (or arguably 2/5) of your has retired/been traded and yet nothing has been done to remedy. They had to have known "this is going to be bad". Now, if they made the decision off the get go to say, "let's see what Allen can do with this" I'm all for it. But they didn't - they clearly had a plan to protect him. Now, as a knee jerk reaction they change their mind? I'm sorry but that just speaks volumes of poor planning and being completely overwhelmed.

McDermott and company stumbled into the playoffs last year and I really don't think they'll experience that "success" again.

Nate's got only limited experience in actual games but there is a pattern that's formed which is he underperforms.  He might be great in the coaches room, in practice and in pre-season but that has not translated into game performances.  Seems to me that Nate earned his start last week and also earned his way to the bench.

Allen will be harder for the Chargers to defend.  He's a threat to run, he can and probably will sling it deep and he can extend plays better.

I think we'll see a whole new Bills team this weekend.  Home crowd, good weather, new QB and a lot of attitude after last week's butt whoopin'.

I don’t think the coaches were expecting peterman to get through the season. I believe their plan was to get through the first quarter maybe half a season tops then play Allen. I don’t think they envisioned not getting a first down and having 2 turnovers in the first half. Some of this is on the OC, wide receivers, oline as well. As much as everyone wants to hate on peterman that was a full team effort at sucking against one of the best defenses in the league on the road in poor conditions.

Right on! Coaches will have to scheme correctly, move the pocket, teach him to give up on failed plays so he can get to next one, throw ball away, slide and step out even for a loss. Most importantly stick to game plan regardless of score to allow for development.

The plan was to ease Allen into the starting role.  They were hoping Peterman could be a placeholder until later on this season, but Allen was ALWAYS going to be the starter.  You don't trade up to number 7 to get a guy and then sit him.  Peterman looked good in training camp and in pre-season, but once again, failed miserably when it counted.  Some guys are just good practice players, but can't handle the pressure when it's game on for real.  Peterman appears to be one of those.  At this point they seem to realize that Peterman is not capable of holding down the fort.  It's really that simple IMO.  Doesn't indicate any flaws with the coaching staff.  The flaw is with Peterman.

Ahh, how soon we all forget that Cincy game in which Allen was under such heavy pressure he went 6 of 12 for only 34 yards and was sacked 5 times IN THE FIRST HALF! He was sacked for more yards then he threw for...

I hope Allen sits until Pickerman throws his picks and then Allen comes n.

Yeah.. because he definitely didn't learn anything from that game that will help him improve in the future..

Projected statline: 15-36-178-1-3, 7sacks

As bad as that is, it's a huge upgrade over Peterman.

I'll go: 18-30, 247, 2TD's 1 pick, 3 sacks

Very good analysis.  For those thinking that this wasn't coach's decision...he said the final decision is his when it comes to who plays.  I think it's more like what some other posters have said.  He made a decision to start Peterman and develop Josh slowly and it didn't work out.  Unfortunately the results were more than losing a game.  It was losing in the most embarassing way possible.  So...he has to live with that.
