Following the Buffalo Bills' 47-3 drubbing given to them from the Baltimore Ravens, the quarterback question remains on everyone's mind. What should Sean McDermott do for Week Two, and is that different from what he will do? Plus, Joe Buscaglia and Matthew Fairburn take the defense to task for failing to be the thing to keep the team afloat after all these highly touted acquisitions. And hey, the first two official entrants in the 'Come on, Darlene!' bracket!

60 million should get you at least 3 good linemen and WR who can get open.

We’llpay somebody about as good as Dareus, Dareus money. Somebody about as good as Cordy, Cordy money. And somebody about as good as Robert Woods or Sammy Watkins, their money.

Then the rebuild will will be complete...got it. ??‍♂️

Those guys will be "Process" guys though, fwiw.

Can anyone articulate the Process I've been hearing so much about?

When you send a conga line of talented players out of town because they don’t have 100% buy in on your “process”, sinking your cap with dead money as a result, you end up sucking.

The only hope we can have on this season is the lack of skill talent and offensive line talent doesn’t cause irreparable harm to Allen’s development.

Trust the Process is a slogan. It’s nothing. It isn’t even original. It’s the football equivalent of “make america great again.” It’s empty language and we’d all do well to start ignoring it.

From a leaked memo, published by an anonymous "Senior Official" -

I. The Process.

A. Ensuring that we keep our jobs beyond 2019.

(a) Make playoffs at some time in 2017-19 so we can't be hit with "extended playoff drought into it's third decade" criticism.

(b) Then start frenetically making personnel moves to give the impression that there is some underlying theory. Hope no one notices old John Wooden aphorism, "Never confuse activity with achievement."

(c) Hitch wagon to mediocre college QB; when he becomes mediocre NFL starter, you will be hailed as a genius.

(d) Draft raw "project" 1st round QB for same reason as (c).

II. The Out.

A. If I.A.(a)-(d) fails, blame ownership.

To be genuinely optimistic you have to believe that Beane knows what to do with all the upcoming cap space. Not sure why you whould trust him at this point; I sure don’t.

This past free agency there was not much out there that you wanted to spend too much money on, except for QBs and we whiffed on McCarron.  Nothing on OL.  The money spent on Star and Trent was not extravagant.

Hoping for better pickings next year.  I don’t think we should even spend to the max next year.  Better to save to sign our drafted players and lock up a core from three drafts.  This is a not a fast rebuild, especially since they traded away all the talent from the Whaley/Nix regime.

Thank you Capco for looking and replying!

As bad as that list is remember some of the older guys (and there is a lot of them) could retire.

Others will get signed by their original team.

And yet other will sign with non Buffalo Bills teams.

We could easily lose three OL starters to free agency and get even worse.  I figure we can play a rookie at Guard and/or RT next year if we get them in the first 3 rounds.   Hopefully we pick up a free agent Guard as well.

Building depth will take time.

Yes, pretty much nothing.  Name all the really good Offensive Line free agents last year.  There was almost none.

Pretty much every football program is talking about it.   Most teams have problems at OL.  The ones that don’t sign their guys.

When you do that you are admitting your weakness as a coach.  You can't get the best out of those players so you give them away even though it makes the team demonstrably worse.  You then replace them with players you are comfortable with even though they aren't as good because they will buy in to your BS.  This is a tire fire and it's only going to get worse when these bozos finally run out of snake oil to sell they will have left the team completely devoid of talent but full of guys who respect the process.  You think the Sabres have been bad?  Just wait.

But, but, 1 trillion in cap space will fix this next year.  No?  Maybe the 5th round guard?

Sal's Sticks: Bills at Ravens

On a 747 (WGR550) - Before I even get into the Sticks, I’ll tell you that yes, it was as miserable down on the field at M&T Bank Stadium as it may have appeared on television, and probably worse.  A constant rain, wet equipment, and of course, a game that was hard to watch no matter where you were standing.  At least from the Bills’ vantage point.  There’s not much I can write that went right, and too much I can specifically point to that went wrong.  So that’s how I had to construct the Sticks this week, starting, of course, with being behind them, which the Bills offense was all day:

BEHIND THE STICKS

The entire offense
Offensive Line
QB Nathan Peterman
WR Kelvin Benjamin
CB Phillip Gaines
First half defense
Three horrible special teams plays

AHEAD OF THE STICKS

RB/KR Marcus Murphy
Bills linebackers
Run defense

THE BIG PICTURE
If you’re of the mind that those who kept predicting the Bills will be one of the worst, if not the worst team in the league, were way out of line, Sunday wasn’t a good day to try and prove them wrong.  They certainly looked that way, and for the most part, in all three phases.  What was most disturbing to me was how uncompetitive the Bills were for most of the contest.  The Ravens basically did whatever they wanted, controlled both lines of scrimmage, and sometimes made it look easy even in the pouring rain.  It’s only one game and we’ve seen teams look great or awful year after year on opening weekend who then have a season that’s pretty much the opposite of that.  0-1 is 0-1 regardless if the score is 47-3 or 21-20.  It all looks the same in the standings.  But nothing the Bills did (or didn’t do) Sunday really instills much confidence that they’ll be much better next week when the Los Angeles Chargers come to Orchard Park.  Ah, the Chargers.  The team Nathan Peterman had his infamous first start against last year, throwing five interceptions.  Peterman will once again be a huge story throughout this week leading up to the playing the Chargers.  But this time it will be because head coach Sean McDermott has to decide if he will go back to him or launch the Josh Allen era two weeks into his rookie season.  The window of opportunity to turn to Allen may never be more wide open than it is right now.  Whether it’s the QB, personnel on offense or defense, or simply playing at a much higher level than they did in week one, something has to change fast and dramatically for the Bills, or those people who made those predictions are going to start looking a lot more right than wrong.

There might not be 3 good lineman to choose from next year.

I already named one bro.

I’m not doing basic googling for you. Do it yourself then apologize for being ignorant. There were elite linemen available last offseason.

I can’t disagree with this. The best coaches are able to handle a diverse group of personalities. The bloodletting of talent from the team has been remarkable.

Agreed. Moon nailed it. Problem is these tricks that McD always goes back to still work around here, because we’re still surrounded by rubes entranced with that fantasy of ‘old school football.’ It’s why people here, to this day, advocate “pounding the ball”... as if sticking with rex ryan’s version of offense is going to work any better now than it did two years ago. Check your calendar old timers, and check yourselves.

Yeah let’s talk about ignorant.  I see you answered your own quote with Norwell, not mine.

Do your own googling?   What a moron. LOL.
