As Allen was getting pounded in the 1st Q if the Bengals game (and not playing awfully either),  I have no doubt that McD decided there was no way he was going to put NP in the 2nd Q against that Defense.  He made his decision in that 1st Q.  And he would not let NP look like that (and like he did in SD game) in the preseason.  He wanted NP to "look steady" against the future preseason cuts so that the decision to not start Allen week 1 would be more palatable to the fans.

I thought the plan announced before the game (and stated by the announcers) was for Allen to play into the 3rd quarter.

Allen's night ended early after he got his bell rung but good at the end of the 1st half.

People here love their conspiracies, but I don't think wanting to protect NP from "looking like that" entered into the decision making at all.

All preseason, they seemed to have a plan and to be grinding it out.

Last time I checked, we paid a QB coach to mentor our young QB.

Who has been a WR coach for the past 30 years. He did have a few small stints as QB coach in the 80's at Southwest Louisiana and Western Kentucky...

I know. We can debate whether or not we have a good QB coach. But putting down Peterman because he can't mentor Allen is stupid, IMO. That's not Peterman's job. It is no QB's job, really. Favre refused to mentor Aaron Rodgers. Sometimes teams get lucky, and the veteran will help the young guy. Most times, it doesn't happen.

But it is the coaches job and ultimately the GM job to make sure your 1st round QB develops. Are we setting Allen up to succeed? A QB coach that has not done anything for any NFL QB ever. A group of QB's that adds nothing to his development - he is not learning from watching Peterman let alone if Peterman wanted to mentor him. As the article suggest this is a very rare occasion to have a top 10 QB sitting behind a nobody.

I understand the concern, believe me, but Imma go with Greg Cosell on this one.  His comment from watching Allen was "it's obvious he's being coached, and he's receptive to it".

But is that because the starting point is so low? He is learning footwork etc which most guys learned at a big time college not in the NFL. Allen has never been anywhere - small town ca, JUCO and then WYO. Its a good thing in that he can grow hopefully, but bad if you dont have the folks to get him there. To this point I think it has been mostly Daboll, I just think he hits a ceiling potentially with this supporting cast and that slows his growth. .

Peterman will be serviceable as a passer, more so than Tyrod. He will definitely not have the same mobility though. It will even out. Where Tyrod would not see the open man or miss on the throw, Peterman will be getting sacked or possibly turning the ball over. Allen is the future make no mistake about it, but Peterman is more ready at this point especially playing behind this OL. It's not about ego or anything, it is smart coaching not throwing your future franchise QB to the wolves.

I'm all in on my conspiracy theory!

No way they could let NP revert to NP and then start him Sunday.

I know this to be true after being a loooooongtime season ticket holder (parents got them in 1960, still have them).

If Peterman goes 28 games in a row with fantastic stats and then has a clunker game, the trolls will surface out of their gopher holes and all chime as one, "But, but, but Peterman had a 5 interception game in his first start so he sucks! True fans will be objective but trolls ? Nope.

Its the old Buffalo Eddie from the Eastside mentality. Yes, I'm old, but you don't have to get offa my lawn. I actually love to see kids playing on my lawn !

The Bills took some slack around the league last year starting Peterman over Tyrod. Then it completely blew up in their face when Peterman failed in historic magnitude. Luckily the Bills made the playoffs because if they had barely missed I think it would have been talked about over and over how the coach failed the team with that decision.

Fast forward a year and I cant help but think McD doesn't still fume over this. That his ego is still hurt and wants redemption. If Peterman can be even ok then McD can turn the page on his terrible decision last year.

Does this cloud his judgement and push the Peterman as the starter? I still cannot fathom how this team goes into the season with him as the starter. Its not like he was a high pick that you dont want to give up on. We are talking about a marginal guy that has shown he is average at best, limited upside and has minimal value as a mentor to a young QB. Makes no sense. If we are going with the average guy why not bring in a vet that can mentor Allen until he is ready. Starting Peterman is a waste of time. Yes maybe he plays great and increases his trade value but that is a longshot. Might as well roll the dice on a former early pick if that is the game.

You have a very low opinion of our HC. You talk like you can read his mind and you know his reasoning or lack thereof. Quick! What number am I thinking of? Should be easy for you.

From Jerrry

Playing Peterman was virtually unprecedented. Since 1971, only one QB with less starting experience had started the opener over a rookie who had been drafted in the top 10. That was Doug Pederson, who started ahead of Donovan McNabb. But at least Pederson had five years and 21 games of NFL experience under his belt.

They have to start Allen now. I don’t know what McDermott will do. He drafted Peterman in the fifth round and took a lot of heat in the national media for starting him over Tyrod Taylor with his team at 5-4 last season. He wanted to stick with Peterman and probably would have if Peterman hadn’t laid such a colossal egg at the Chargers.

McDermott thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room. I suspect he wanted to show the world he was right about Peterman. When Peterman put up good numbers in the preseason competition, he had his justification for starting him over Allen. This was the result.

He’s just stubborn enough to stick with Peterman. It would be a bad decision.
