Stadium Name

I believe this exact same thread was created a while ago.

 

I finally got on board with saying "Ralph Wilson Stadium" a few years ago.

 

Prior to that, it was always Rich Stadium.

 

Now I call it one of those 2, usually R.W. Stadium.

I remember bumper stickers reading something to the effect of:

 

Rich Stadium – Paid for by Erie County Taxpayers, NOT Ralph Wilson.  

 

I seem to recall late 70s to early 80s?

My recollection is that Rich Products paid $1 Million for the Stadium naming rights for something like 20 years.  According to another thread, the Bills just paid DiMarco $2.1 Million just for showing up at OBD.  (Inflation is a funny thing.)

I remember reading the story of how outrageous Ralph thought it was to pay OJ $100,000 a year. Also, my dad always tells me how crazy people thought it was that he paid $12 (as opposed to the usual price of $8) to see the Stones there.

The face value of my ticket from 1980 when we beat the Dolphins to break the decade long 'curse' was $13.00 lower level sideline.  Yikes!

My dad remembers that game fondly. I didn't know my grandfather very well, he died when I was 3. But from what I've heard, he was a very conservative, no nonsense, mild mannered type of guy. But on this particular day, he was throwing beer cans out the window on the way home.

I liked First Niagara Center. Even though it was a bank, it had a local sounding name that didn't "sound" like a corporate name if you didn't know. Rich was the same way. I think that's why people never stopped calling the Bisons stadium Pilot Field. It was a corporate name, but didn't feel as corporate as Coca-Cola Field, Dunn Tire Park, or the worst, North Americare Park.

It was a memorable day. I still carry the ticket stub around with me in my wallet.  A few years back I ran into Don Shula in the Miami Airport, and we talked for quite some time while waiting for a flight. Of the hundreds of games that he coached over the decades, that game was one that definitely stood out to him.  After tearing down the goal posts, the urban legend was that the Bills were happy to order new ones from a company in Miami. Good Times indeed.

I paid $15 to see The Who there in 1982.

So now that there's two members left, it should only be $7.50, right? Hell, I'll settle for $11.25 since 2/3 of the original 3/4 of the lineup from 82 are still there.

Inflation overrules pro-rating. I paid $65 to see them in 2015.

Literally just googled it before you posted this. And I'm sure your $65 seats were nosebleeds too. As opposed to what was probably a GA, or one price for all seating in 82.

It's what they tried calling it as a "hip" tie in with the New Era thing. Always felt forced.

...New Era does have right of first refusal on naming rights of new stadium if one is built....at a significantly higher price tag..........
