Uncle Tupelo. Groundbreaking trio launched the alt-country/punk country sound that has influenced wide range of bands today.

I’ll go further to say they were easily one of the best bands in music history. Severely underrated.

Staind had some decent songs especially when they first came out, but their stuff was kind of hit or miss for me.  -

I also liked some of the stuff Stabbing Westward did (if you like that Nine inch Nails, Tool type of sound). They have some great lyrics  -

I would also list Incubus but I don’t know if they really qualify as underrated.

Self (kind of a band but mostly Matt Mahaffey) Try to listen to the debut "Subliminal Plastic Motives.

Great call!  This song is like a prophecy.  It is more true than ever.

Avarice and greed are gonna drive you over the endless sea
They will leave you drifting in the shallows
Drowning in the oceans of history
Travellin' the world, you're in search of no good
But I'm sure you'll build your Sodom like I knew you would
Using all the good people for your galley slaves
As your little boat struggles through the the warning waves
But you will pay, you will pay tomorrow

That is some fantastic lyrics!

Better than Ezra is a great call.

Saw them with Cracker and Letters to Cleo at an outdoor show outside Utica.  Great band live.

But you left out the important information that Jeff Tweedy was the frontman of that band (for you Wilco fans).

March 16-20, 1992 is a GREAT album. Produced by Peter Buck for FREE (R.E.M).

The closest you will ever get to U-T's sound is Wilco's first album, A.M.
