My point is we are running NE offense and he is struggling in said offense. How will he be better in the more advanced program of this offense?

Expand

But is this program that 'advanced'?  We don't exactly have a Tom Brady at QB.

Again he is losing Reps to Lee and Croom and Thomas that has NOTHING to do with the QBs. That is ON him. And in this offense which NE runs also is being OUTPLAYED.

The way you linked that list I was expecting to see a bunch of scrubs.  There is a lot of success on that list.

There is indeed. O'Leary wasn't a highly valued prospect coming into the league and thus far in his NFL career he's been just okay.  The point remains, being a Mackey award winner doesn't carry a lot of water in the league.

We have no idea what this means at this point.  Maybe the coaches are comfortable with O'Leary and want to evaluate the others?  We'll see how it plays out

You’re assuming that he is losing reps to those guys because of his performance.  I don’t know that to be true necessarily.  Frequently, in the preseason, coaches will give extra reps to “fringe” players to see what they have.  Not asserting that this is the case with O’Leary, but it is a possibility.

But you assumed him losing reps isnsomething else hence your lock statement earlier in the thread. So going back to the point of the thread.

Yes Nick OLeary is a possible cut.

Notice how other positions the coaches are “comfortable” with at the position are not losing their reps. When has Hyde, Poyer, Dawkins, etc etc slipped down to third team reps

1) I am not defending O 'leary, as I said I could care less if he leaves but is he really struggling in this offense?  Failure to understand it?  I dont recall reading/hearing anything about that.

2) NE uses the Erhardt-Perkins system, for some players it is actually easier because the terminology is dramatically reduced.

And my point was that O'Leary has a history of success, at the highest level of college football at least, and has shown some flashes in this league.  Which is more that can be said for the other TE's not named Clay.  That carries more weight with me than training camp reports.

Ok but the difference is it doesnt for the coaching staff. What they do know is to this point in his career he has been blah.

They didnt draft him.

And are taking 1st team reps away from him currently

Quote my “lock statement.”  It doesn’t exist.

O’Leary is the 2nd TE.  There has been lots of shuffling of the 2nd/3rd team players.  What are you talking about?

I wouldn’t read too, too much into O’Leary with the 3rd stringers.  They may just be trying to give more reps to Thomas, Lee, and Croom to see what shakes out.  I think O’Leary is safe as our #2 TE.

Ok instead of Lock you said Safe. Same thing.

So what TE is working with the ones today. Ooo yeah nevermint it isnt Oleary. Like he was earlier on OTAs and Camp. So yes losing reps to other TEs.

“I think O’Leary is safe...” is quite different than saying he is “a lock” to make the 53.  Not even close to the same thing.

Expand

Sure so the safe No 2 TE is not safe to make the top 53. try and spin and twist all you you want.

And it shouldn't, the coaches have access to these guys everyday.  Until I see it with my own eyes, I can only go by the information that I have.

And as Johnny said, we have no idea what the coaches are thinking with the rotations.  Is Milano in trouble because Humber is taking first team reps in his place today?

What?  I’m not trying to spin or twist anything.  Quote all my posts in this thread.  I merely have offered my opinion that O’Leary is safe to make the 53.  You have differing opinions.  The only fact here is that neither you or I know exactly what the coaches are thinking.
