Actually, about three months ago I went to see a local Pink Floyd Tribute Band, who played all of Dark Side. They were good. I even got my first writing piece to be officially published out of it Then a week later I got free tickets to a different Floyd tribute, who did all of Wish You were Here. The one I'm seeing a week from today is a group called Classic Albums Live. They tour the country, and do a different full album, and usually a few greatest hits, of different artists. The Wall should be great, doubt they'll do much if anything else after being that it's such a long album.

If I had to rank my top 5 country artists it'd be

  1. Waylon
  2. Willie
  3. Hank Sr
  4. Cash
  5. Charlie Daniels

For my birthday in June my fiance got me a Johnny Cash hat, a Waylon Jennings car decal, a shirt that says "Waylon, Willie, Merle, Hank, Johnny" and a Willie Nelson ticket. Best gift I've gotten in a long time.

1. Waylon

2. Hank Sr

3. Hank Jr.

4. Cash

5. Merle

Heck of a birthday gift. I did get an autographed postcard of Johnny Cash some years ago. Pretty awesome. I even had it authenticated. Still hanging on the wall now. Funny thing is that it's probably the only pic I've seen of him wearing blue, but the little brass tag says "Man in Black". Of course that was a moniker of his, but they had to put it on the only freakin' picture in existence of him not wearing black.

Dire Straits - Dire Straits

Close to the Edge - Yes

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd (Call me crazy but I think The Wall deserves consideration too)

Shangri-La - Mark Knopfler (check out all his solo stuff)

These Wilder Things - Ruth Moody (way different from the rest of the list).

I love Zep and agree that III is way underrated.  I can't say it is their best and even like some of their later stuff like In Through the Out Door, but I think I and II are strong but overrated when compared to III.  III to me showed way more range.  I have no argument with IV.

Agree 100% on your first point.  Disagree on the second...but it's sort of like saying it's the slowest sprinter on the Jamaican 4x100m relay though.  All of them are pretty damn fast!  I actually rank them II, III, IV, I personally.  But all are phenomenal.

Totally agree on the Jamaican sprint team analogy.

When I say "Zeppelin III is easily the weakest of their first four albums", it is also worth mentioning in the next breath that Zeppelin III is better than 98% of all rock albums ever recorded.  Or something like that.

Put it this way: I would (and have) recommended to people new to the classic rock genre to go out and, before anything else, buy and listen to Zeppelin I-IV.  And that includes III.

That would be the foundation upon which I would build any vinyl collection.

Zeppelin I-IV are their finest work.  Houses of the Holy is OK, and it was all downhill after that.

Of the first four albums that form the backbone of their work, III is easily the weakest.

I guess that's why it tends to get passed over.

That's your opinion.

By and large the top 5's on this list have been older albums. Probably just the demographics of posters, maybe not.

I always thought that CD's were a game changer. Not sure the exact specs, but old guy remembers when your typical two sided LP would fit on a 45 minute cassette. CD capacity was more like 75 minutes. I often got the impression that artists tried to fill up the 75 minutes, which ended up with more filler.

Please tell me you are kidding here... all downhill after Houses of the Holy? Why is this jewel of an album not in the mix?

That's awesome. I tried to get Willie's autograph once. Showed up to the venue like four hours before the doors opened. I'd gotten autographs there previously from Chuck Berry, REO Speedwagon, and Creedence Clearwater Revisited (Original Bassist and Drummer. Not quite the original act, but more than just a tribute band.) But security wouldn't let me anywhere near Willie's bus. This was like two months after some podunk cops decided to raid his bust and, surprise, Willie Nelson's bus had marijuana on it.

Marijuana?!?!

GASP!

I would love to get Willies auto in September, but I feel I'll be lucky if he even plays. From what I understand he has not played over a dozen of these OMF's because he wasn't feeling well. I can't blame him, he's damn near 90 years old, but I do hope I get a chance to see him.

Haha. This was my first CD. I bet I could still sing along with it cover to cover.

Yeah. Like I said earlier, I was glad he came out, and I that I was able to see him. Not sure I'd go again unless the other acts on the ticket were worth it.

It is always difficult to narrow down a list of anything to 5, and to choose how to determine "favorite."   Favorite all time?  Favorite now?   I was going to start a thread where you had to list your albums in lifetime order of number of plays.  That would be a bit different that what I list here.  But if I want to listen to something now, I guess it would be because it is my favorite.

Fleetwood Mac - Then Played On      The first incarnation of Fleedwood Mac, better than the second IMO

Moby Grape - Moby Grape         A group which should have been big but they released 3 singles at the same time which confused Radio stations on what to play

The Kinks -  Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall  of the British Empire)       Many good Kinks albums around this time, difficult even to pick my favorite but Ray is always a great listen,

The Strawbs -  Acoustic Gold          Really sort of an acoustic greatest hits but these were not really hits commercially, just very good songs.

Fairport Convention -  Liege and Lief       English folk rock, always loved this group especially with Sandy Denny

Albums don't seem to be a strong song wise as they used to be, but I always wonder if that is just because I don't commit to playing them enough to get hooked on them.  And all these seem to be based on my listening during my early 20's.

Interesting 5 you chose, I used to have the first Moby Grape Lp with the "finger" on it that was removed.

You strike me as someone who would like/is into Steeleye Span, I have one album that Bowie played sax on.
