  1. 1. What do you use as a blanket term for sweetened carbonated beverages?

  2. 2. Where did you grow up?

i have never heard soda used growing up in Southern Ontario, even with hundreds of road trips to the Rust Belt for sports

I call it by the name brand(s)

I do the same.  I'm not interested in the fight or the awkward stares, so I get as specific as humanly possible.  If I'm not sure what a place carries, I'll just ask for "a diet coke or pepsi, whatever you have".

anything that has sugar and is fizzy is soda to me.

But when we drink seltzer water, it's seltzer water.   Or sometimes Soda water.

Today is free Slurpee Day...11am - 7 pm.

If I want the awkward stares, I will ask for vinegar for my fries.  Oops wrong thread. ?

But Dr. Pepper, is Dr. Pepper. It was invented here, and they're quite proud of it.

'Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too'?

Sounds like some sort of cult...?

In Texas.

Coke = Coke

Sprite = Coke

Pepsi = Coke

But Dr. Pepper, is Dr. Pepper. It was invented here, and they're quite proud of it.

So, what if you want a Sprite, but you ask for a coke...and the server gives you a coke?  I can imagine the conversation...

Patron:  Yeah, I’ll have a large Coke.

- Waitress brings a large coke.

Patron:  Excuse me miss, but I ordered a coke and you brought me a coke!  ‘Murica!!

I grew up in the south and typically refer to the specific drink, or say soda when referring to carbonated drinks generally. I'm told we call everything Coke, but I've never heard anyone call a Sprite a Coke.

The way my Southern co-workers in the service explained it, I guess you order a Coke.

Then they ask what kind of Coke. And then you specify weather its something different than a Coke :lol:

This actually happened to me. When I first moved here.

My cousin; "Hey Joe. Grab me a Coke out that cooler over there."

Me: "There's no coke in that cooler."

Cousin: Are you sure? I just filled it up.

Me: Yeah. There's Mountain Dew, Sprite, Orange. But no Coke

Cousin: Then hand me a sprite jackass. Those are all Cokes.

Then he explained the differences.
