Lol, so we are on to blame Bernie now? So Trump is acting like a socialist? (National Socialist?) Great, that's a wonderful excuse. ---- https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/factory-workers-arent-getting-what-trump-promised/2018/06/25/725d7c92-78b4-11e8-aeee-4d04c8ac6158_story.html?utm_term=.5be2cf03cfff In Florida, orange growers fear a drop-off in demand due to retaliatory tariffs on OJ shipped to China and the European Union. In Iowa, soybean, corn and pork producers fret about the hundreds of millions of dollars in sales they stand to lose from retaliatory duties on their exports to China, Mexico and the E.U. Hoosiers worry about the fate of those same sectors, plus the chemical, transportation equipment and machinery industries that are being targeted for Chinese tariffs. And Indiana automotive-part and orthopedic-joint manufacturers will now face higher input costs thanks to Trump’s steel tariffs. In Kentucky, bourbon distillers are losing business with distributors, who are frightened off by retaliatory tariffs across many of our trading partners. Similar stories apply to Wisconsin cheesemakers and MRI manufacturers. And Ohio auto and auto-parts manufacturers, brewers and appliance makers.
3rdnlng Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 While I am for free trade, it must be fair trade. The countries (or the EU) that have screwed us over the years will have their problems too. I'm old enough to remember bailing out the Soviet Union with grain sales, not because we had superior grain or cheaper grain, but because we had grain and they didn't. This crap will sort itself out and we'll win some and lose some. It'll take some time but cooler heads will prevail in the end. 1
Tiberius Posted June 26, 2018 Posted June 26, 2018 Shares of Harley-Davidson Inc. dropped Monday, after the motorcycle maker said it would have to eat the “substantial” short-term costs of the tariffs imposed by the European Union, but it planned to move some production overseas to ease the burden over the long term. In a tweet Monday afternoon, President Donald Trump said he was surprised that the company “would be the first to wave the White Flag.” Shares extended their slide in premarket trade Tuesday, after Trump criticized the company for its plan to ramp up production overseas to avoid the EU tariffs, going as far to say a Harley-Davidson “should never be built in another country—never!” The Milwaukee-based company made it clear in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, that the EU enacted the tariffs on its U.S.-made motorcycles in response to the tariffs the U.S. imposed on steel and aluminum imports from the EU. Europe is Harley-Davidson’s second-largest market, and fastest growing, while its largest U.S. market has been shrinking for the last few years. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/eu-tariffs-hit-harley-davidson-where-it-hurts-2018-06-25 He's threatening, discrediting and bullying Harley Davidson now. What type of President does that? I clearly remember all the screaming at the sky by the likes of GG over Obama demanding BP clean up its mess, a real shakedown! Not a peep when Trump just goes off on a company for running its business as it sees fit. The right in this country is a mindless joke, all Trump cultists to lesser or greater degree Quote A Harley-Davidson should never be built in another country-never! Their employees and customers are already very angry at them. If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end - they surrendered, they quit! The Aura will be gone and they will be taxed like never before!

Harley contracts manufacturing of parts to plants located all over the world, including Germany, Italy, Taiwan, Japan, and Mexico. Those parts are then shipped to Harley factories here. And these are not just accessories, but components for engines, chassis, and wheels. Exactly what percentage of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle is American made, is not exactly known, as each model and model year is different.

You love taxes. Why all the hate for this one? And I didn't blame Bernie. I just pointed out it is a lefty policy he should love. I don't like it wherever it comes from. You dislike because of where it comes from. If it came from Bernie you'd love it. The only way to "win" this is to use it to get tariffs on American goods lowered and then remove ours in that negotiation. We will all see if it works or if it is even tried.
