According to Paul Hamilton Price who is considered one of the better goalies in the league is having a below par year. So going to the backup shouldn't be a big determining factor. I can see the Canadiens figuring that the Sabres beat them at home with Price in net so might as well figure it as a loss well start the backup on the road. Price has played better recently than he did earlier in the season but he's nowhere near the guy they thought they were getting when they paid him all that money.
