No one should be expecting McCarron to be anything but a backup quality QB. He was the last and cheapest QB available in free agency. He has actually started games and looked like a backup in those games. That being said if it's better for Allen's development I don't care if McCarron starts most of the year. This year's success will not be determined by our number of wins.

NO, but the amount of pressure to start Josh Allen if McCaron implodes will grow each week.

If Allen is not ready you are setting everyone up for failure.

Why do you think McCarron is going to implode? I really don’t see any basis for it.

He was 2 - 1 with the Bengals and should have been 3 - 0.

Yeah I remember all the pressure to start Peterman too. I hope the Bills are smarter this time around. The only person that should determine when Allen starts is Allen. If McCarron sucks but Allen isn't ready we need to accept that this is a developmental year and take our lumps with McCarron starting.

Oh I didn't miss your point.  It's kind of inane to compare bad play from a guy like McCarron to bad plays from some of the greatest of all time with the old "even the best QBs have bad games" stuff.  Absolutely no equivalence, no matter how small, can be drawn between McCarron and those three.

People use that line (we saw it here more than once with EJ) all the time and it is so unpersuasive that I don't know why they bother, except maybe to convince themselves it's "not a bad sign".

You didn't even respond to my post. I said to go ahead and be critical. Just call the criticism for what it is.  To call it a "highlight" clip is lazy and passive aggressive. And yes my point in a previous point was to pick from some of the best QBs and say I can find faults (I can)  and call it a "highlight" clip.

Let me separate my point from other verbage....  Do YOU agree the title should have been called something other the "highlights"?  If yes,  we are on the same page regardless of how it is stated (or regurgitated). If not,  I guess there is no hope of being sensible.

PS AJ is NO WHERE the same tier as Brees, Brady,  and Rogers.

EDIT BY MODERATOR: I am going to weigh in here and say a single word in quotation marks that is not a quote, is commonly understood in some circles to take the opposite meaning or be meant as sarcasm.  I believe "lowlights" or "critique" would have been a better choice.  It is not clear to me that it was intended as passive aggressive etc etc.

There has been some good football discussion in this thread, including (now) several posted highlights and play breakdowns, so the title is now appropriate in either sense.

I commend to you all the continued discussion of football.

He was 2 - 1 with the Bengals and should have been 3 - 0.

Because he doesn't have any pocket presence, he panics and runs away from non existent pressure.

He is a one read QB and if it is not there he panics.

he doesn't drive the ball, he mainly tosses it out there.

His arm strength is questionable at best.

He makes very questionable decisions.

He has relied on a good run game and stout defense his entire career. Has not been asked to control the game.

In those 3 starts in 2015 He threw for under 200 yards per game. and the Bengals offense died with a great surrounding cast.

Don't you LOVE the hypocrites that LAUD Tyrod Taylor for passing 190 YPG yet want to trash a sophomore for doing the same ????

Enough with the crusade 26CB.  We din't need a 2nd or 3rd thread from you on it.

Someone quote this so he can't "pretend" he didn't see my post

AJ McCarron was the last QB standing in fre agency and we signed him for $5 million per season. He is in a starting competition with Peterman and a rookie.

Tyrod was traded for with the #65 overall pick. The Browns are paying him $16 million this year and have repeatedly said he is the starter, period.

Who do you think has more value to NFL teams?

seems the browns have paid that to another mediocre QB so it's not saying much about them picking up taylors contract and a pick to boot..

https://herosports.com/nfl-draft/browns-2nd-round-16-million-brock-osweiler-texans-ahah

so this thread is about some twit on twitter showing the bad games by McCarron to keep the opinions divided on whether he sucks or can manage well enough as a gap?

there will be a competition, no one here knows the out come of that competition.

rookie starts? maybe

McCarron starts? maybe

peterman? I believe he'll be cut

either way, the twit on twitter is really proving nothing from games played back in 2015.

at this point McCarron is as unknown as the rookie and we'll find out after camp/preseason who'll lead the offense.

I would like to see the Allen start and feel McCarron will be a solid back up.

It's one guy's film breakdown, and it's valid. Just because something has a negative slant doesn't make it trolling. Making up bogus statistics instead of using actual data, refusing to back up a point with valid data or even a reasonable premise, those are trolling. This thread, aside from snarky use of quotes in the title, is not trolling.

Said Film breakdown was of the low lights.   Why do you think I mentioned the other guy?

The agenda's against McCarron and Allen are idiotic at best and need to stop  IMHO.

Repeating the same "disparaging" remarks for McCarron in 3 separate threads  (by the same author) is Trolling.

The plays were what stood out to him. It's not like there's some crazy abundance of film to choose from, the guy's thrown less than 200 passes.

Kirk Cousins if getting near about #$30 Million.   Is he worth $30 Million?

Is Jimmy Garopollo worth $30 Million?

Is Ryan Tannehill worth $20 Million?

Is Blake Bortles worth $20 Million?

Is Sam Bradford worth $20 Million?

I think you are kind of proving a point here.

The money market for mediocer QB's was insane this year. and yet teams stayed away from McCarron for whatever reason.

I have to wonder why that was?

Tyrod taking a snap from the behind the Right Guard sticks to mind too. Hope he doesn't do that in Cleveland too

Lets not get ahead of ourselves and call people failures before we have seen them play.

Timing and stupidity?

Seriously,  timing and looking for a guy with actual starting experience.

What a guy gets payed does not mean he will suck.

How many teams still needed a QB when McCarron became a FA?

How many QB's were left in FA when McCarron became one?

I haven't called anyone a failure. My expectation, however, based on his NFL play is that he'll be a bottom third starter at least a tier below Dalton.

He became an unrestricted free agent on March 14 .  Who still needed a QB then?

I am speaking in general terms.    I wasn't blaming you.  You seem to assume that often.

He may be a bottom third starter at least a tier below Dalton.  We just won't know what he is until he plays.

The Browns offered the Bengals a 2nd and a 3rd round pick for McCarron. The Browns saw more value in McCarron than Taylor.

Vikings, Broncos, Cardinals, Browns, Bills, and Jets for starters, more for depth. The league year opened on March 14th at 4:00 PM EST.

McCarron wanted the opportunity to start. Buffalo gave him the best chance of doing that.

All of them? McCarron won his hearing back in February. He was out there with every other UFA.

The current Browns front office could have signed AJM for no draft pick compensation at a lower salary than Taylor commands, but they didn't. That makes your statement untrue.

Not the Browns. They traded for TT on March 10.
