aristocrat Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 So we're seemingly about to pull the trigger on moving up and drafting a franchise qb. Looking back at other teams drafting high recently and I see a few guys that teams should move on from. Jameis Winston, Mariotta and Bortles. The Jags gave Bortles an extension but outside of their organization nobody though he was the guy. I don't think anyone around the league thinks he's the guy. I thought Mariotta would be a solid qb but never thought Winston would be the guy. If I were the bucs I'd move on from Winston and take a new guy this year. Mariotta hasn't shown a whole lot either but perhaps with a new coach he could change. Will either of these guys get the 30 mil extension for 100 mil or more? If we take a guy how many years do you give him? 2? 3? 4? make the trade? all day but gotta be able to move on once we know if it hasn't worked

K-9 Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Just now, aristocrat said: do you see them leading their teams to a title? With better supporting casts, yes. They have enough talent. Bortles is simply lacking, imo.

He's mobile with a good arm and can create plays. His coaching stinks. I would take him in a heartbeat. Put him on the Eagles or the Saints or the Steelers etc and we wouldn't be having this conversation

But I think you need to look around a bit more at other QB around the league and what their play looks like - cash a reality check, as it were. Look at the year-by-year performance of QB in the league you consider good, and take a gander at how many years it took them to raise their play to the level you deem appropriate to stop the team from throwing them in the trash as "Not Franchise". For example, in his 1st year as starter, Brady threw for less than 3000 yds, 18 TD and 12 INT. In his 4th year (3rd as starter), 60.2% completions, 3600 yds, 23 TD and 12 INTs - very much like the year Bortles just had. 1

He'd have to be a disaster of JaMarcus-like proportions. Three to five. But basically, every guy is different, so every situation is different. Generally three to four.

Doc Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 I think they all get another year, but they're all looking doubtful to ever be franchise QB's.
YoloinOhio Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 It’s a fair question but I think as long as they show progress, you keep them. Maybe draft a guy if things look bleak after year 4. Sometimes an issue arises when you switch regimes during the QB’s rookie deal, because they didn’t pick him.

Bortles has started 4 years, Mariota and Winston both started for 3. Which of them would you cut, and why? Look at Aaron Rodgers. How far is he getting without the talent around him. He was a backup for three years before starting . You want to get rid of a guy after his third year? C'mon !!

I might be looking for a replacement for Bortles any time I get a great shot at someone with a good chance. IMHO Mariota's going to make it, Winston and Bortles are still question marks, though honestly I haven't looked at Winston enough probably to have an educated opinion. But if inside the building I see they are absolutely committed and putting in the work to improve, I'd keep all three, though they'd be on shortish leashes if they plateau.
