Mine is passing yards.

Here's my reasoning. I cannot think of a QB who throws for a ton of yards who was not at least a decent NFL starter.

If you throw for a ton of yards, that means you are moving your team down the field. The offense is working. Things are happening. Plays are being made in the passing game.

All of that means you have a foundation to build on. If it's a Carson Palmer type situation where the guy throws for 300+ all the time but also 3 INT you can try to work on that ans cut those picks down with coaching. At least the guy has proven able to move the sticks and get skill positions involved in the game. Stafford is a lot like this too. the guy throws for a ton of yards but also turns it over a bit too much.

Lots of bad QBs had a great completion %. Think trent with the Bills (he forever gets the lower case for prancing out of bounds without a care in the world on a 4th down play with the game on the line in GB).

Lots of Bad QBs have thrown for a surprising number of TD. Blake Bortles was right behind Tom Brady for the 2016 season in TD passes. But he stinks.

I always come back to yards, because it means the QB is playing the game. His job is to distribute the ball and move the team down the field, and yards are proof that he is doing that.

What is YOUR #1 QB performance metric?

I like yards as an option but I think I'm biased because we haven't even had a 300 yard game in a while. I could start with yards then dig deeper.

I also think interceptions are overrated as a negative metric. This became so obvious to me last year when we would have 2nd or 3rd and long from midfield, but Tyrod would just throw it to Tolbert for a few yards. In that case taking a shot downfield and throwing a pick inside the opponents 20 is equivalent to a good punt.

When talking about college QBs, I like to look at their play against top teams. I remember EJ Manuel being garbage against top 25 teams.

NFL QBs? Eye test. You know a good one when you see one.

"eyeball test."  i watch how they move in the pocket and how they read defenses and what their ball placement is like.  if you watch a lot of QB film you can just look and see that a guy is good because you have seen it before in another good QB.  when i watch Josh Rosen I think of Eli Manning and Matt Ryan

My problem with passing yards as a QB metric is that it's not correlated to winning.  In fact, there's a weak correlation to losing!!!!

If you think about it, you can see why - teams tend to pass a lot, when they're trying to come from behind.

This year, the QB with the most passing yards are, for the most part, the QB of winning teams - but that's not always the case.

I don't have one.  I look at three: completion %, YPA, and TD/INT ratio.  I think you actually explain why pretty well in your post above :D

My reason for this is that these three metrics have a strong positive correlation to winning, as well as a rational basis for evaluating QB performance when taken together.  If a guy is completing a lot of passes but still has good YPA, it means he's not "checking down" all the time.  If he has a good TD/INT ratio, it means he's not disadvantaging his team more than he helps them score.

I have a floor for passing yards of averaging >210 ypg (I'm not sure exactly what the number should be - maybe 200, maybe 230).

interception percentage. Brady, Rogers, Wilson, Ryan etc are all career top 10

Checkdown Taylor just left the building, I could throw to Tolbert all game and not throw a pick.
