In Retrospect: How Did We Make Playoffs Last Year?

See, I think you could easily argue it was AFTER the Peterman/Chargers debacle that McDermott solidified his leadership. He didn't blink twice to admit his error, fully take responsibility, get  Tyrod back in the rotation, and come away with a huge road win IN Kansas City, no small task on a good day.

Maybe. I wont argue that hard against it. My point was that we've had teams who loved their coach before. Stevie, Fitz, Wood, and Kyle all loved Chan a lot. Even Jauron had his time (before he rolled over against New Orleans and lost the team for good).

Shocking win at Atlanta.

Shocking win at KC after clearly being the worst team in football for the prior 3 games.

Indy getting jobbed on their 2-pt conversion in the snow game.

That's 9-7 instead of 6-10.  And even with that you need the Dalton miracle.

They won that game in Atlanta by playing better than the undefeated defending NFC Champions on their home field. How is that luck?

They impressively came out of a nosedive to win against (admittedly the only other team that might have been playing worse football at the time) a team that would go to the playoffs. That's the marking of a good team, not luck.

Indy also got very lucky because the snow equalized what would probably have favored the Bills in normal weather. They also were lucky that Tyrod, the one QB who might have thrived in that weather, was hurt. Also, while the flag was late, it was a legit flag.

Played solidly enough to amass 9 wins vs just enough AFC teams. Then got some really fortuitous breaks that enabled them to qualify for postseason with that record in the AFC playoffs. 9 is usually not enough, especially in the AFCE where the New England  disadvantage almost kills any chance of a WC berth. Most years. The Bills have been 9-7 before (2014 Marrone year) but the law of averages worked out this time.

The chips finally fell in the Bills favor.  They’ve had better teams over the drought, but got unlucky.  They were in a clump of teams that could’ve made those WC spots. - as they’ve been in the past.  This year things broke in their favor and they got a spot.  As with those past seasons they were just as deserving as the other teams in that clump.

So sorry it ruined your hope of Bills tanking.

Not sure what you're talking about.  Who said anything about tanking?

Who said luck?  They were well coached and outplayed Atlanta and KC and deserved those wins - and I said they were shocking, not lucky.  As for Indy, yes a legit penalty but that flag was embarrassingly late.  Bills caught a break and took advantage of it.  That's what it takes for an overachieving team to make the playoffs.

the question is how did they not make the playoffs in 17 years.   Every season a team or two get into the playoffs that are best described as Ok.  Outsiders may say they stink or they got lucky , home fans say they are spunky and ever say die.  The Bills have had the Brady/bill b  effect to deal with While most teams get 16 games to win 9 or 10 ,the bills consistently have 14 games to achieve the same.  Sure , other teams have had to face a dominate division foe that goes on a nice 4 or 5 year run but these Pats have been damn near  best team in the conference almost every season.  Put the Bin the nfl south over the last 5 seasons and the overall outcome would be different.   Now for their part the Bills have never built a dominate team or found an elite qb but they also never were able to have a how the heck did that team make the plays off year until last season.

The good news is Brandy and Bill b are close to the end and the Bills may have found themselves a capable group to lead them , heck they may even get that qb this year

Nah, that could never happen

Dont' like when it's said the team was lucky or that the other team's were bad and so on.

The Bills put themselves in position where the Bengals win got them in.  If they had not done so, if they had not done what they needed to be in that position, they would not have been a playoff team.  How?  Several factors:

1.  Good coaching.  Laugh about process all you want but sticking to that helped the team succeed, especially after the bad stretch with the Jets, Saints, and Chargers.

2.  Solid D especially in the secondary and turnovers.

3.  Good draft and FA acquisitions.  White, Dawkins, Poyer, Hyde, Gaines, and so on.

4.  Shady. And an O line that was effective in the run game as maligned as they were

5.  A QB that while not winning games was careful with the ball and thus did not throw games away.

House $ was a huge factor. Kept us close (along with the bend don't break D) with all those 50+ field goals.

This helped keep the team in games mentally.

Sure beats punting in your own territory.

We made the playoffs. It was either good enough for you or not. I think it meant a lot to a lot of different people. Let's enjoy it for what it's worth.
