I thought Star Trek The Motion Picture (the first one) was pretty cool and had a dark flavor to it that was not like the TV series. It stands out among all the S.T. movies to date in terms of its style and feel. Pretty good movie. I'm not really a star trek enthusiast though. 1

Star Trek: The Motion Picture, did not deserve all the bad mouthing it got. It has a very good story, and it is quite innovative. Yes, there are some scenes that go on far too long. Did we really need to have the first shot of the Enterprise to be 30 minutes long? I'm sure that after Star Wars, fans were hoping for a lot of action and thrills from this movie, and that's not what they got. They would get it later with The Wrath of Khan. It's too bad that this film was not as well received during it's initial run. It holds up very well.
frostbitmic Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 Does anyone know if they plan on making any more Star Trek movies With Chris Pine as Capt Kirk and the rest of the crew (minus Chekov's character) ? It seemed at the end of the last one a couple of years back they made it seem like they would but I haven't heard anything about it.

Ridgewaycynic2013 Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 I wonder if the '5 most polarizing Bills' thread will be resolved by then?

It's too bad that this film was not as well received during it's initial run. It holds up very well. It was one of the contemporary complaints of STTMP: that it was cut to try and make it more of an action flick to compete with Star Wars, and in doing so they cut out important story points. And the extended release, with those story points restored, is a much better movie - less ponderous and better paced despite being some 15 minutes longer. Critics didn't call it "Star Trek: The Motionless Picture" for nothing. (They also called it "Spockalypse Now." Pretty sure that was for nothing.) They also had other technical issues that impacted the film - the bridge set, in particular, posed unforseen challenges with lighting and filming, which is why good chunks of the movie look like they were filmed in a dungeon. 17 hours ago, Mark Vader said: Did we really need to have the first shot of the Enterprise to be 30 minutes long? After 10 years of Trekkers trying to resuscitate the series? You underestimate the degree to which STTMP was intended to be nerd porn.

Gray Beard Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 I think the Star Trek movies belong in the “Movies So Bad You Like” thread that was hot a few days ago Especially the one about he whales... “Admiral, we’ve got whales here!”
