Because there's no such thing as an "assault weapon."

Don't understand your thinking. If a rifle is a sub category of weapon and there can be an assault rifle, then one would think that an assault rifle is also an assault weapon under the sub category of assault rifle. What's a Tommy Gun?

I view it as an assault rifle is to a weapon as a pickup truck is to a vehicle. We have pickup vehicles much as we have assault weapons.
