3-30: Ryan Leaf on the Rich Eisen Show

Recommended Posts

This is how delusional Leaf still is.  He literally thinks he had the same passion for the game as Mayfield.

One guy literally blew off a meeting with Indy before the draft so he could sit in the sun in California, while one is on a podium telling Cleveland he is the one to turn the franchise around.

Leaf will always be a delusional, arrogant prick who loves to make dumb comments to make a dollar.  What's best for Leaf, is what will happen with Ryan still to this day.

Honestly, what is your problem?  The rest of us can watch these Leaf interviews and talk about them rationally.  You are just projecting your own bias.  So I'm calling you out.  The guy has obviously grown as a human being, if you can't get that from watching, especially, the Rich Eisen interview, then you are merely a troll with an axe to grind.

Where Ryan Leaf has come in the last even 10 years is nothing short of amazing. Good on him for turning his life around - it couldn't have been easy, and probably still isn't day in and day out. If you follow him on twitter, he is one of the most responsive 'celebrities' in giving words of encouragement to people with substance issues. Stand up guy in my book.

Further, the guy knows what he is talking about.

Good interview. Guess he's not so dumb after all.

I'm not concerned about Mayfield's personality. My impression is that he's basically a sensible guy who will be able to transition from playing a game with a bunch of kids to a professional environment where many of his fellow players are grown men with families to support. I think he has more going for him in that regard that some folks are willing to give him credit for.

His size, his only average athleticism and the college system he played in are the things he has to overcome. There is a reasonable chance he will be able to do that.. And that's why he's a top prospect.

Less than two minutes into video he was talking how sports were toxic for him.  No buddy, you were the toxic one.  Stop blaming sports on your attitude.  The dude is still arrogant prick.

This is nonsense. He wasn't blaming sports. He said "sports were so toxic for me that ..." Not that sports were toxic for anyone but him. It's quite plain that he's talking about how he felt in the past.

If he still felt sports were toxic he wouldn't be making his living with them. He's saying that's how he felt at the time because of his issues.

A person can express possible concerns about Baker Mayfield without being arrogant.

You are missing the point. Sports were not the toxic part of him back then. It's passing blame.  He would have had the same issues in his life whether sports were there or not.

What you're saying here is exactly what he was saying. Exactly the same. He had serious issues. Those serious issues made him think that it was sports that was toxic for him at that time. He's now worked through the issues and knows that he was wrong. The problem was him. He knows this.

Did anyone else catch the odd mistake he made when talking about his first game as a pro. Leaf said he vividly remembered playing against Steve Young and the 49ers.

Wrong! That first game came in San Diego against our very own Buffalo Bills. It was also Rob Johnson's first game as a Bill and proved to be a harbinger of things to come, as RJ was knocked out of the game.  Flutie (also in his first action as a Bill) came in off the bench and ALMOST pulled the game out.

That was 20 years ago, of course, and maybe Leaf truly did "mis-remember". However, the Bills also played the NFC West that season (their first victory of the season, in fact, came in an upset victory over the Niners). So Leaf (and the rest of the AFC West) would not have played against the NFC West in 1998, which means that Leaf didn't even play the 49ers AT ALL in his rookie season.

Maybe he played against Young and the 49ers in the preseason that year, which was not the implication I got.

Of maybe he is just full of bull.

There was a rumor at one point that the Chargers wanted to trade the rights to the 2nd overall pick to the Bills that year (98) because Kevin Gilbride wanted Rob Johnson from the Bills. Gilbride was his OC in Jacksonville. At the time I though the Bills should have done that, but neither of those guys amounted to much. I do wonder what history would have been like had we made the deal and then had Leaf bust on us the way he did. Ironically he beat us opening day that year. He barely won 4 games his career and we were one of them.

He may not have busted in Buffalo.  Leaf's issue was partly the California life during playing season.

Anyone know if there is transcript for interview?

No..... But if I was, you and Teabag are big boys. You can take it.

just want to jump in here, Manning definitely teabagged a trainer. Leaf didn't as far as I know.

Not a Peyton fan, and Leaf is too far off my radar to pass judgement.
