Five-round mock draft: Buffalo Bills trade up for Baker Mayfield

PICK 6
Baker Mayfield - QB, Oklahoma
PROJECTED TRADE WITH COLTS.
If Bradley Chubb isn't there for the Colts, GM Chris Ballard will be happy to move back again to gain a package of picks that would include, at minimum, a third-round pick in the 2018 draft (reflected below) and a 2019 first-rounder. Bills head coach Sean McDermott is hungry for a playmaker at the quarterback position, so a move up the board is definitely possible.

PICK 22
Courtland Sutton - WR, SMU

If the team is going to get a quarterback, he'll need receivers with whom he can connect in 2018 and beyond. Kelvin Benjamin is due to become a free agent after the 2018 season, so Sutton provides another big body in the receiving corps.

53. Bills: Tarvarus McFadden, CB, Florida State
56. Bills: Tyrell Crosby, OT, Oregon
65. Bills: Terrell Edmunds, S, Virginia Tech
121. Bills: Leon Jacobs, LB, Wisconsin
166. Bills: Dimitri Flowers, FB, Oklahoma

Could we really trade up to #6 and only have to give up one 3rd round pick?  I'd be on board with that.

I read somewhere today that Indianapolis was OK with the trade from #3 to #6 but wasn't willing to trade out of the top 10.  If that is actually true, there is no reason to think they're any more willing to trade out of the top 10 now than they were a week ago.

it also has the bills giving up a 1st round pick in 2019

The last pick of the 3rd round and a 1st in 2019 to not only trade up to 6 but to do so to get Baker Mayfield is insanely good. That leaves pick 22, 53, 56, and pick 65 to build up the rest of the roster plus a few picks sprinkled in to help address depth needs. I don't see this happening because I don't think the Broncos are passing at Mayfield at 5 and I think a trade up for Mayfield would cost a bit more (I think you have to include a 2nd at the very least.)

I have been saying this since day 1.  I would love to see our first two picks being used on a QB and a receiver.  Bottom line, we need to score points.  If we stay put at 12, QBs will fall, and I think Mayfield will fall right into our laps.  I honestly don't think we need to trade up.  If Giants take a QB, then yes, we may need to make a move.  But I truly think that out of the 11 picks before us, only the Browns and Jets will be taking a QB.

We'd have to give up more... unless the more was from next year's draft.  We gave up FAR more for the Sammy trade-up from 9 to 4

Yeah but we didn't have a shrewd NFL-calilber GM at the time either........

I don’t see it. Why get an extra first this year to trade away next years first?  Not sure I buy it.

Either way - we have a lot of draft capital and I like this draft class a lot.

So I’m conflicted.

Id like Darnold or Rosen or Mayfield. I’d accept Jackson or Rudolph or Allen (without trading anything). But I don’t see any of them as light years ahead of Watson or Mahomes who we could have had last year standing still.

I understand - that was last year.

I think if we cannot move up to get one of the ‘big 3 or 4’ I’m happy to take BPA and improve our team.

this is predicated on the jets taking allen over mayfield and the broncos passing on mayfield....i can't see both of these things happening. as a matter of fact i think it's nothing more than wishful thinking.

if mayfield does not fall past 5, we are pretty much stuck at 12. if this is the case, i would take vita vea and rudolph at 22.

i do not want to see those two in miami.

not sure if i'd trade up 2 spots to take vea ahead of the fins, but we really need one more dt and kicking the fish in the nuts would be nice.

I could buy into this in the wake of Zay news.  We have no cap space, no WRs, and now Zay is in trouble.

sign me up for Mayfield and a wr in round one.

By no cap space you mean 21M in cap space with some more coming post June 1 once Eric Retires??
