2018 Salary Cap Set at $177.2 M - Franchise/Transition Tag Numbers Out for Each Position

Recommended Posts

Well, it'll actually be another week before free agency kicks off, but NFL clubs were notified Monday evening that the 2018 salary cap has been set at $177.2 million, NFL Media's Mike Garafolo first reported.

That's a $10 million jump from the 2017 number ($167 million) but not quite the spike that we saw from 2016-17, when it went up more than $12 milion.

The figure is negotiated by the NFL and NFLPA.

The 2018 league year, which begins March 14, marks the second year of the four-year rolling average in which clubs must spend a cash minimum of 89 percent of the cap and the league-wide cash minimum must meet 95 percent of the total cap amount.

Here's a list of every club's current cap allotment, per spotrac.com: http://www.profootballweekly.com/2018/03/06/nfl-sets-2018-salary-cap-at-177-2-million/aujptoq/

Each year, the final salary cap figure flows directly from negotiations between the NFL and NFL Players Association. This year, it was expected that the salary cap would at least hit $178 million per team, with a strong possibility of exceeding $179 million.

The NFL has released the official numbers for 2018 NFL franchise/transition tags by position, along with restricted free agent tender values. A few reminders:

  • Franchise tags are fully guaranteed as soon as they are signed (not offered).
  • 5th-year options for 2015 1st Round picks will be worth the transition tag for that position.
  • Players who received a Performance-Based Escalator will see their 2018 salary increased to $1.907M (already updated on Spotrac).
  • Players who were franchise tagged last year will be subject to a 120% raise from their 2017 tag. Meaning Le’Veon Bell will be subject to a $14.544M tag with Pittsburgh if it’s offered tomorrow as expected. Teams will have until July, 15th to hammer out a long-term contract with any player offered a franchise tag.

So how do the Bills go from 24 million below the cap right now to 92 million below the cap in 2019?

There isn't a way of knowing the exact cap number, but Dareus will be off the books in 2019 (dead cap hit of 14.2 million this year).  We also only have 37 players signed through 2019 according to sportstrac.  http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/cap/2019/

2018 Salary Cap Figure Now Official

Posted by Chris Brown on March 7, 2018 – 8:39 am

It had been projected slightly higher, but now the 2018 NFL salary cap has been set.

The league announced the Salary Cap for the 2018 league year has been set at $177,200,000 per club.

That’s an increase of just over $10M from last year’s cap of $167M.

The Bills cap limit is almost $189M after they rolled over just over $11.5M of unused cap space from 2017. Following the signing of free agent RB Chris Ivory on Tuesday, Buffalo’s cap room is in the neighborhood of $22M.

The Falcons weren’t able to land Michael Bennett, but they have freed up some cap room for their next foray.

According to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Falcons have restructuredthe contract of veteran guard Andy Levitre.

He was sent to enter the final year of his contract, and was carrying an $8.3 million cap number before the move.
