Davis  had a base salary of $10M in 2017 , little more then Gaines is projected for 2018  by spotrac.

Maybe a show me contract with incentives for Davis who will be 30  on May 27. Better then just letting Gaines walk if he is asking too much with injury history.

Bad trade IMO.

Watkins was primed for a huge year with Tyrod and without him the offense was pitifully out-of-balance all season.

The WR pipeline looked great in 2014........there had to be more coming........right?   Nope.     The well dried up.   The freak talents stopped coming.   Which is why a WR with Watkins #'s as a late arrival in a new offense this year is even considered as a possibility to get a $16M franchise tag.

The second round pick turned out to be pretty late......that's what happens when you make a team better by trading with them........and this draft is looking WEAK as !@#$ compared to some past years...........and now one of the Bills primary needs is a WR.

Another thing that has to be considered in this trade is the cap. There is No way they were going to retain Watkins this year. Otherwise, I agree

Watkins, in the one of the most high powered offenses last year, whilst staying healthy, got outplayed by Cooper Kupp. The guys is always primed for a good season, he never has them. People need to stop living off hope with Watkins.

Learn to watch football.

Watkins stretched the field for them and drew multiple players in coverage.

He's the reason kupp and woods had so much free space.

A player's impact on a game goes far beyond just the stat sheet (this goes both positively and negatively for many guys, such as tyrod holding the ball too long lowers his ints which looks good on paper but actually isn't that great during a game)

Watkins helped that offense tremendously .

Feel free to read this link below from a Rams' analyst, instead of a from the perspective of a Bills fan who probably didn't watch a single Rams game.

He has another article that he's not sure the Rams offense scheme requires a true #1 wr, so they might still let Sammy walk, but that's not because of his talent

(For the record, I am not upset we traded Sammy, as Gaines played great for us and we have another second round pick this year from it. To act like Sammy isn't an impact wr though is just wrong)

Sammy was so important to the Rams they're letting him leave in FA.

Do a little research and to why they might let him walk

Their offense design might not require a #1 receiver (similar to how the pats have been for years) which I explained above.

That doesn't mean that a receiver like Watkins doesn't impact their offense more than a lesser receiver would.

Pats tossed moss when he was still putting up #s for him.

The Rams might but feel that Watkins is worth the $$ he's going to command, in regards to their offensive scheme, and are going to franchise another player.

A team letting a player walk doesn't mean he isn't good or that they don't want to keep him.

We are probably letting Gaines walk, do you think he's not good?

Cost of a factor.

Teams let players walk all the time, does that mean that every FA that walks isn't good?

Why would another team ever sign that player?!

I said it elsewhere, and it's something that I haven't seen anyone (poster, media member, analyst, etc) mention...

Sean McVay is doing with WRs what Steve Spagnuolo did with pass rushers; he's dressing 6 quality WRs and rotating them in bunches.  And just like when OTs that had to play 70+ snaps per game couldn't hold up against Spag's pass rushers, CBs that have to play 70+ snaps per game can't keep up with McVay's WRs.

As to Davis: smart signing that could be sneaky in terms of value.  Now go get me Joe Hawley as a gameday interior backup and I'll be thrilled with the pre-UFA work.

I assume that this means Gaines was asking for too much and the team decided Vontae was a better value at CB for the team. Hopefully this is at least a wash as to making the Bills a better team. I hope part of the strategy would be a mid-late round draft pick to pair with Tre for the future.

I like the signing. It's not throwing the bank at him. If he can be 80% of his former self, that's a great #2 corner. If not, it was worth a shot. And it doesn't hurt to have a vet teach White a few more things.

Exactly my thoughts.

Similar to the talk about Watkins.

Letting a free agent walk doesn't mean you don't want them or that they aren't good.

Sometimes they cost more than you'd like to spend/have available cap

Sometimes they don't want to stay

Hope we keep Gaines.  Gaines and Davis are good injury insurance for each other, but if they are both healthy we'll be rolling out a very strong secondary.

We need to spend the money on the front four.  We need pass rushing bad, or McDermott's D is not going to work out.

Not to its fullest effect, no.  The secondary performance was even better when you consider the lack of rush.  We need to get more aggressive and more dominant up front in all 4 spots in my opinion.  It's why for all the emotion put me down as one who doesn't believe Kyle Williams should be an every down starter if he chooses to come back.

^^^^^ This..... it's his right to test the waters....maybe he stays, maybe he goes, but we will not be overpaying because of need.  Good move by OBD

Is this your original name?  Or did you change?  Don't know how to look anymore.

Love Bob and Doug.

Forget Gaines.  I think he priced himself out of the Bills' range.  I'll be curious to see what he eventually gets.

Do we know this for sure?  His asking price?
