YoloinOhio Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000916199/article/saints-bills-rams-among-nfls-10-best-offensive-line-units Using the unique Next Gen Stats tracking data provided by the microchips in every player's shoulder pads, we're looking to take another step in evaluating the performance of the offensive line. The rankings for this list were created using a 1-32 listing of both pressures allowed (pass blocking) and average rushing yards gained before close (run blocking) for every team. The rankings were then finalized with the lowest composite score coming out ahead. NOTES: Next Gen Stats defines a "pressure" as a pass-rushing play in which a defender gets within 2 yards of the opposing quarterback at the time of the throw or sack. Other outlets collect pressures using different methods, and these have value. What is and is not a pressure will always carry some level of debate, but NGS provides us a unique advantage in that the numbers rely not on the subjective eye test, but rather on objective results that are consistent across all plays. "Yards gained before close" (YGBC) measures the amount of rushing yards a running back gains before opposing defenders come within 1 yard of the player. In addition to making sense intuitively, this metric correlates with other measures of run blocking success. The league average is 0.29 YGBC.
Augie Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Ummmm, that was not the feeling I got. We couldn’t run like we had the previous two years, and Tyrod, well, you know. I’m hoping next year has a totally different feel. If your line is #2, shouldn’t it FEEL better???

Big Turk Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 (edited) McCoy had a few big runs to the outside where there was literally no one for 30 to 40 yards...actually 2 plays in a row that led to a TD in the Chargers game...there would have to have been a lot of bad plays to offset that... atlbillsfan1975 Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 I really think the talent isn’t far off on the line. We need a scheme and coaches that fit the personnel . 1

Big Blitz Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 (edited) The Steelers ranking on that list is absurd and that alone destroys it's credibility. They have the best oline in the league. Steelers Eagles Saints Rams Vikings That's my top 5. Edited February 20, 2018 by Big Blitz 1
transplantbillsfan Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 This is a complete joke. Read how they generate their rankings. Of course Taylor made our OL look significantly better based on this criteria. 1
Doc Brown Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Football outsiders has our line at 27th in run blocking and 31st in pass blocking. Maybe we're somewhere in between, but these metrics they use make more sense to me. There's no way our line was 2nd in the league. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol 1

I think that lines up more with reality. Their methodology was an absolute joke
GrizzReaper Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Most of us can see that the line was bad... Personally speaking some shoddy metrics aren't going to change my mind about what I saw. I watched the games and what I saw with my own eyes wasn't the 2nd best line in the league.

There's lies, damned lies, and then there's statistics. A good OL protects the passer and opens holes for the runners. The Bills OL did that far worse in 2017 than in the previous 2 seasons with most of the same personnel, and against good Ds, they performed only marginally better than the horrible OLs fielded during the Jauron era.

Well, they did fire the OC and are rumoured to want to get into the top 5 of the draft to get a QB. That should answer your questions. 1
Comebackkid Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 when the ball is hiked, you blink and 2 guys crash the line and land on the QB, your line isn't that good. 1
