There was talk that the Bills had interest in him last season.  I wonder if there will be any interest at OBD with him eligible to sign with any team ahead of the new league year.

I always liked Davis a bit but I am a huge proponent for young corners

More tread left, faster. You can get them up to speed very fast in a primarily zone defense

Productive , yet, cheaper defensive backs  are the way to go IMO

look at how we revamped our secondary in one year, with a bunch of cheaper role players who became key cogs or contributors

They have to begin looking at replacements in the event that Gaines heads to UFA.  David Amerson is also a UFA who can sign before the new league year begins.

I would love love love Gaines back but it really looks like he is gonna get 8-10 million a year

dont know if we can pay that. Amerson might be a decent option in a heavy zone scheme

he was a ball hawk in college

Gaines is a good player, but can he really command that price with all of the durability concerns?

...dead on as usual......this gang has done an admiral job in decision making with the secondary......factor out Gaines' unfortunate injuries (BIG W/L difference when he's healthy) and their grade is still solid........

The problem is that he gets nicked up in 50% of the games.  No exaggeration; he missed 5 altogether and parts of 3 others.

I like the player; it's awfully hard to pay him what he's going to want in light of his availability problem.

I personally wouldn't think he can command that... but with the lack of solid Corners in the league their pay day just keeps going up

i would love love to have him on a 4 year 30 million dollar deal

Gaines is very good. Unfortunately he plays so hard he usually takes himself out of games...

hopefully He takes a team friendly deal because he has a bright future if he stays

I would tie his contract to games played.

His agent would never let him sign that deal

It's not all that unusual to have an incentive laden contract with some bonus structure tied to availability related to % of snaps or games played.   That would be fair given his injury history.

I could see tying some bonus money to games-played, but you're never going to get that on a long-term deal.  That generally only happens in one-year prove-it style deals like the one signed by Alshon Jeffery last offseason.

Fair point.

I may be in the minority but I want Gaines back. I’d draft a guy in the 4th or 5th that I had confidence in to back him up. The secondary was outstanding and I don’t want to roll the dice that it continues with someone else in that spot. I would rather take my chances that Gaines can stay healthy. that will be the strength of the team and even better with pass rush.

I'm with you. Frankly there isn't another free agent out there that I'm more comfortable replacing him with and I don't want to spend another day one pick on a CB. When you consider the value we're getting with the other starting DBs I'm OK with giving Gaines a market value contract.

And I think Ross Cockrell might be a good back up we can bring back on the cheap. He's a solid zone corner that didn't fit Rex's D.

...completely agree......but was there much in his injury history pre-Bflo to tag him as a bad hire?.....when healthy and for his skill set, his $1.797 million dollar deal was a good find which is what I'm trying to say............

Well, he's never completed a 16-game season.

He missed only 1 game as a rookie, then missed his entire 2nd season, missed 5 games and parts of 2 others in his 3rd year, and then missed 5 games and parts of 3 others with Buffalo.

To me, that's a major concern.

Kirby is right that the secondary was downright excellent with him in the lineup, and if all things were equal, I'd like him back.  I just worry about the value for a guy that will probably want $10M AAV.

How far will Beane be willing to go with McDermott's saying the best ability is availability?  They simply can't count on him given the history.
