What dumb stuff does he do off of the football field? The fact that he has saved all of his NFL money is unique in a league where lots of players are broke shortly after leaving the league.

Thats Gordie pounding it into him. He respects his dad and listens to his advice.

Hes immature and with his immaturity comes idiocy. He’s a big kid who needs to grow up.

Talk.

The fact he didn't spend all his money is a smart thing to do, obviously, but it also could have simply been one person telling him to do it, him agreeing, and then just doing it. It doesn't automatically make him smart, which he doesn't seem to be after listening to him a few dozen times. He could be as smart as, let's say, The Jerk.

I have the perfect screen names for him to consider using:

Robbed Gronkowski.

or

Robbed Gronk.

or

just like "The Rock"

"The Gronk"

if he does porn, then:

Rubbed Gronk.

One thing is for certain, he was smart enough to listen to a financial advisor early on and heed his advice. Life is a lot longer than your sports career, especially in football. To take his $50,000,000 in earnings and put it away is amazing for someone his age. I'm sure the endorsement money and other side money is quite substantial as well though. He does dumb sh*t in the offseason, but who didn't when they were his age? Lord knows I did and I wasn't rich or what you would deem famous. Is he a dick for what he did to Tre? Absolutely, but I don't know him personally to comment otherwise. If he retires then great for him and great for us. If he doesn't then oh well. Either way none of us know him well enough to speak any truth about his mental capacity. Nor do we have any idea what kind of person we would be as a rich as f*** and famous 20 something.

He has a good support system around him and seems to have some sense. Just like he was taught being smart financially I suspect he’s getting reasonable advice about whether 2-3 years of football might be worth 30 years of being happy and functional later

Also - in his case I think there’s some gray area between “dumb” and “set for life and going to have fun and doesn’t care what anyone thinks.” Yea he does a lot of ridiculous stuff- and I don’t particularly like him - but I suspect a lot would be dumb for me but no big deal for a multimillionaire

Right? Ultimately some of our best stories are being young, dumb, and without fear of consequence. He gets that on steroids 250 days a year. With just a small modicum of common sense - he can do whatever makes him happy. Whether or not he truly gets it, I’m not sure.... but if he does, there’s something to be said for being smart enough to go live life in big bold ways while you can

He has always sounded reasonably intelligent to me.

I think he’s probably average middle class jock that wasn’t a rocket scientist but generally pretty functional at life — and he’s gotten far enough that he rarely has to be super serious.

As in "Your heart just sank, like from joy." He's said and done endless dumb things. Many are on purpose, or are harmless, granted, trying to be the goofball. But you can't tell me he puts two smart sentences together on his own. He's a doofus.

Good post.  I will just add if he was smart he would retire.  Listen, love him or hate him Gronk takes a beating out there.  Defenders routinely go after his knees because he is so big to take down.  His style of play & what the Pats ask him to do is very punishing on his body.  He already has had several back surgeries, some knee problems & now you can add a concussion onto the list.  If he doesn't want to be one of those guys in 20 years appearing on Outside the Lines of "where are they now" & being in a wheelchair, he should get out now.  There is nothing left for him to prove.  He will go down as the greatest tight end ever & first ballot HOF.

If he retires, does he make it into the Hall of Fame?

Hed be behind a handful of guys from this era — gates, witten, Gonzalez are all ahead currently.

jimmy graham might surpass him soon.

Turns into a log jam and receivers will be competition for him too, with a glut there due to the passing explosion

i think his post season records give him a nice bump but he’s probably 2-3 seasons off from slam dunk?
