ExiledInIllinois
Decent article. The article mentions points where I feel the gov't has mismanaged the fisheries the last 51 years since the introduction of invasive pacific salmon into the Middle Lakes (Michigan, Huron, and Erie) ecosystems. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-lake-michigan-water-clarity-20180126-story.html Fighting one invasive (alwives) with another (king salmon) seems to have created an industry (charter fishing) that can't sustain itself without huge gov't involvement (stocking=$$$). Go back to the more native lake trout and the artificially created (& gov't vested) salmon fishing industry takes another hit. We went from too much pollution (along with overfishing, disease & parasites like the sea lamprey) in the 1950s & wiping out the lake trout to too clean of water today... Now "they" are pissing & moaning that the water is too clear! Maybe they need to can the salmon and replace it back again with more native trout, whitefish, perch, etc... Now that we solved the pollution problem, sea lamprey issue, why are we still stocking invasive salmon from the Pacific NorthWest? This is how we slam the door on Asian carp. As long as we protect the salmon (and salmon fishing industry) dependent & needy on gov't subsidies, that door will remain open. Unless, we can teach salmon up in those fancy NorthWest hatcheries to eat something else other than alewives.
