Get Out got 4 nominations?!  One for best picture??  That movie was not good.

I have not seen that movie, yet, but I am just as stunned.

Best Picture? It's that good?

Also "The Disaster Artist" got shunned, thanks to James Franco. "The Post" got hit hard, except for Meryl Streep's annual token nomination.

"Hostiles", "Molly's Game" & "All the Money in the World" all practically ignored. "Money" got 1 nomination.

I was thrilled to see "Logan" get a screenplay nomination. Too bad the academy didn't have the guts to nominate it for Best Picture, or "War For the Planet of the Apes". Contrary to popular belief, there are still great mainstream movies being made.

Rooting hard for Christopher Nolan to win best director for Dunkirk. The direction made that movie.

That would be great.

However, I have a feeling that "Dunkirk" has become a forgotten movie. Despite it's great execution, storytelling, and artistic brilliance, it appears to have taken a backseat to movies like "The Shape of Water" and the overrated "Three Billboards".

"The film was also a box office success, grossing $254 million worldwide on a $4.5 million budget."

Not a bad haul...

...But I agree w/you.  "Sign of the times" and political climate we are in now. :(

I think you are right. Seems like part of that is timing with dunkirk’s summer release.

Disaster Artist was the best I saw this year. The Three Billboard movie was laughably cliched. Heavy-handed garbage. I giggled out loud a few times how horribly unsubtle it was.

Thank you!

"Three Billboards" is very overrated. The acting is good, but there is too much absurdity going on in it to take it seriously, which is how they want us to take it. It's anti-police message is why the people love it so much.

Watch "Wind River", it's a movie with somewhat similar themes, and is a much better film than "Three Billboards".

Was the best actor and supporting actor categories removed or protested because no woman were nominated? Or because all the men now have misconduct acusations against them?

Can't wait for yet another Hollywood circle jerk where they tell us how great they are and how their pretentious crap fest was the best thing because only pretentious people saw it and it wasn't a box office success. Then they can all share their political beliefs to everyone and this year they can make it all about girl power .

I just get tired of being hit over the head with this stuff. We saw "Wind River" and I couldn't agree more.

I have seen some but not all of these movies yet so need tp complete that first before giving an opinion.

Thanks to those that provided recommendations on other movies like Wind River & Disaster Artist.

The only comment I can make after looking through all the nominees Mark listed is ‘Holy Sh!t...Kobe Bryant is nominated for an Academy Award?’

I saw "Get Out" this weekend and I agree with Exiled. Sign of the times & political climate is why this got nominated, which is still stupid to me.

I don't think it's a terrible movie, in fact I thought it was fairly decent. Yet it has no business being nominated for Best Picture, Director, Actor or Screenplay. This got a screenplay nomination?

This movie gets recognition, but "Logan" and "War for the Planet of the Apes" are ignored. Disgraceful.

I thought Logan was going to get a nomination for Best Picture. The movie was great. Just not a good comic based movie, it was just a really good film overall. My girlfriend doesn't follow comics or the movies like I do. But, she was in tears at the end.

  • Mark Vader changed the title to 2018 Oscar Nominations: Predictions

Here are my predictions.

Best Picture

Who will win: "Three Billboards"

Who should win: "Dunkirk"

Cultural and political climate is more important than artistic vision. The Hollywood left hates the police, and "Three Billboards" delivers with their anti-police message, and that alone is enough for it to win best picture. Meanwhile, an artistic thrilling World War II tale like "Dunkirk" is brushed aside as "just another war movie."

Best Director

Who will win: Guillermo Del Toro

Who should win: Christopher Nolan

Del Toro's vision is undeniable, even if "The Shape of Water" may not be his best film. Regardless, the movie's message of tolerance will be highlighted for him winning. Sadly, Christopher Nolan will get ignored. Both men in my opinion are deserving candidates.

Best Actor

Who will win: Gary Oldman

Who should win: Gary Oldman

Long overdue for an Oscar, even though it's only his second nomination. The versatile and talented Oldman commands the screen in "Darkest Hour", and he leaves the rest of the nominees in the dust.

Best Actress

Who will win: Frances McDormand

Who should win: Margot Robbie

Everyone is going gaga over McDormand, and she will win easily, even though she has relegated herself to doing the same thing. Which is unfortunate for Margot Robbie, who gave such a breakout performance in "I, Tonya". The excuse will be that Robbie's time will come later. You could also make a strong case for Sally Hawkins. The anti-police movie is more important than a mockumentary.

Best Supporting Actor

Who will win: Sam Rockwell

Who should win: Sam Rockwell

Rockwell may be winning for the wrong movie(he was overlooked in "Moon"). Unless people feel that Willem Dafoe is overdue, this will be an easy win for Rockwell's unforgettable performance.

Best Supporting Actress

Who will win: Allison Janney

Who should win: Allison Janney

Another lock to win in a fairly weak group. Janney is just miles ahead in this race.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Who will win: Call Me By Your Name

Who should win: Logan

"Call Me By Your Name" has to win something, right? It would take real guts to give the award to the much deserving "Logan".

Best Original Screenplay

Who will win: Get Out

Who should win: The Shape of Water

It's sickening that a movie like "Get Out" is actually nominated in this category, what's even worse, is that it will actually win. Somehow this is more "original" than any of the other candidates. "The Shape of Water" has real originality.

The rest of the rest...

Cinematography:

Will win: Blade Runner 2049

Should win: Dunkirk

Score:

Will win: The Shape of Water

Should win: Dunkirk

Make-up & Hair:

Will win: Darkest Hour

Should win: Darkest Hour

Visual Effects:

Will win: Blade Runner 2049

Should win: War for the Planet of the Apes
