The stuff Mayfield has done is about on par with Micah Hyde spaying Jags fans with water.  Hyde does it and no one notices it, Baker does it and it dominates headlines.  I don't think people understand what the Bills are looking for when it comes to character, from what I've seen the Bills want fiery competitors who can control that fire and not hurt their team on the field with outbursts.

Im pretty sure I do. They are looking for Football character. I think Mayfield has that. I am sure he is high on their list of QBs.

But imo he needs to stop being so hyper-sensitive what people say about him on twitter. He must literally search his mentions because he responds to random people he wouldn’t follow, like a Cleveland talk show host. He gets pissed at the slightest critique (ie Avg arm strength) by a twitter scout. He needs to let that stuff go. College football media are usually a bunch of homers and don’t challenge the players... that is going to change for him very soon and he needs to be able to handle that.

Hyde was arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest?

The on field antics aren't a big deal in and of themselves, but add in the off field it has to give evaluators a bit of pause.  As a QB, His decision making will be the rise or fall of the coach.  If I'm an organization I don't want my QB arguing with random mofo's on twitter.  Maybe he turns out great, but it's fair that people have concerns.

Does water work for neutering, too?

Interesting tidbit on WGR this morning, basically saying that Mayfield is calculated in drawing the attention to himself, especially from the opponent, because he doesn't mind it and it allows his teammates to focus and not have so much pressure on them.

Fair enough. I just like seeing a QB in a pro style system who has faced more adversity than Mayfield. He did consistently move the ball at will, but he also faced very little pressure. Pro QB’s are often pressured on every play. I worry that Mayfield fits the typical profile of an elite college QB who doesn’t have the same success in the pros. He put up out this world video game type stats. The concern is that he looked spectacular in college, but all of his measurables are not consistent with those of elite NFL QB’s

What kid coming out of college has elite NFL QB measureables?

Mayfield is light years more demonstrably better than Trubiski was in college---and Trubiski was felt ready enough to go #2 overall.

Some NFL QBs are more pressured than others.  P Manning had a career where he was able to prepare a nice meal in the pocket while he went through his progressions, for instance.

College game is different as you say.  The quality of defense any QB faces varies wildly from week to week--even facing top rnaked teams.  You aren't ever going to see many draft candidates who have played in a pro style offense who faced a lot (consistently) of adversity from opposing defenses.  Mayfield faced one in the playoffs (Georgia) and he beat them up for a while, then they slowed him down, then he came back at them again.  That's as good as it gets.

Mayfield has good enough size, he is growing on me more and more. 6'0 220lbs, 9.5 inch hands, overall his measurables are good enough. I'd jump up to 10-12 to take him. Cincinnati would be a great trade partner.

By “elite measurables” I’d be referring to physical skills and characteristics. Plenty of guys have been able to check off all of those boxes, including the aforementioned Peyton Manning. Obviously none of those things guarantee success, but a six foot tall Big 12 QB frightens me. Some of us will like Mayfield, and others such as myself will maintain reservations. I’m not going to try changing anyone’s mind. It’s just a gut feeling based on  tangibles that Mayfield won’t be a great pro.

I'd be pretty disappointed if he doesn't play.  Everyone talks about his competitiveness but if he doesn't play what does that show?  Some of the best college talent collects at the senior bowl and if he decides not to play I think that will go against him.  I hope he changes his mind if in fact this is true.  He's having a nice week.  Why not play in the game?

That is a pretty interesting concept. Kind of taking one for the team. It sounds like sugar coating, but I do buy it to a certain extent. If he's willing to take on the criticism to protect his teammates that is pretty cool. I don't love how he responds to the criticism and it seems like it has the potential to be Ryan Leaf-like.

I agree that the guy’s floor seems incredibly low, and scary for a potential franchise QB. I’m also concerned that he doesn’t take criticism well. To be a good pro he’ll need to listen, and take criticism well. Mayfield’s Rose Bowl antics really turned me off. After stating that he had learned from his mistakes, he made another. He walked into the Rose Bowl carrying a sign that read “pretenders”. This was a response to a Lee Corso comment regarding OU in the preseason. Why is he even worried about a commentator’s remark from months ago? He doesn’t seem to learn, and continues to bring controversy to himself. I don’t condemn anyone for making mistakes. I do question their character and intellect when they continue to make the same ones. The NFL isn’t Wrestlemania. How will Mayfield react when his personality is stifled by a pro franchise ?

Pretty much completely agree. Good stuff. I know its boring to be the guy who ignores criticism like Eli Manning, but that what I want my quarterback to be. Boring and efficient.

I tend to buy into it at least a little. I get the sense the guy will do anything to win, and I like that.

I don't like antics, so agree there, but I think he just wants to win. I've heard/read many reports that he will put the team on his back and is successfully in motivating his teammates.

Unrelated to Mayfield, isn't the NFL a little like Wrestlemania? It's an entertainment league above all else.

Related to Mayfield, I'm not sure you have to completely stifle his personality. A good organization/coach just channels it effectively and healthily.

In sum, I get the sense he is a guy his team will really go to battle with/for.

I like this Mayfield story:

osu players were pissed after Baker planted the OU flag at the Shoe. A confrontation on the field in terms of actually stopping him would have been appreciated in Sept but i digress.

From the Ozone — This week at the Senior Bowl, Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes confronted him on a charter bus ferrying the North team to and from practices at Ladd-Peebles stadium, Lewis and Holmes surrounded Mayfield in his seat, blocking him in. They stared down Mayfield, and one of them broke the silence: “What’s wrong with you, bro?”

A pregnant moment passed, then the three burst out laughing. “That’s what you get for kicking my ass the year before!” Mayfield said, referring to the Sooners’ 45-24 loss to the Buckeyes in Norman back in September 2016. The Ohio State pair admitted they probably would have done the same thing had the tables been turned.

You love that guy, if he’s YOURS. Oh, and you’re winning....

Yup, my take as well. If he’s on your team you love him. If not you hate him. I think he’s got a little of that Brady “!@#$ you” mentality which I think the Bills could use tbh

If you happen to catch a little Xavier basketball, watch yourself some JP Macura. He’d be the most hated player on the hardcourt  if he played for Duke. Still, he gets under everyone else's skin! It’s awesome to see!
