Say what you want, I have my own feelings towards this myself but no need to get into it, but I will say this much, I have a feeling this year's Superbowl ratings will end up being one of the worst if not the worst. I think a lot of "neutral" fans may skip this one. Mainly just Philly and Pats fans watching. I'm curious to see what the ratings will be for this one when it's all said and done.

The fact you have two east coast teams could also plays into it.  I remember the subways series for yanks/mets was one of the lower tv rating at the time because they were both ny teams (not the same for NFL but still could be a factor.  I have a hard time buying that a Rams/Seahawks fan would go with Eagles as their backup team).

I do agree though.  I think this years rating will be down.

I feel like most people watch anyways for 3 reason(assuming you're not a fan of the teams in it):

1. commercials

2. halftime show

3. at a superbowl party

That's the brilliance of it.  One back-breaking call is, sometimes, all that is needed.

There was no reason for the ref to whistle the play dead during the fumble recovery.  That's something you allow to be reviewed, not being 100% certain if...

A) A fumble actually took place

B) The player who recovered the fumble was down by contact.

Yep, they stopped it from being 27-10. Ignore a holding call here or there, extend drives because of it, ignore a PI and end a drive. Subtle little differences that add up. Last year on what would have been the game ending drive for the Falcons, they call holding on the Falcons but ignore the more than obvious face mask on the Patriots. The next play Ryan gets sacked and puts them out of field goal range. Those three Points would have put the game out of reach. Nobody talks about it, the officiating gave the pats the comeback.

On the fumble absolutely no reason to blow the whistle, none at all when you have replay to fix it. I don’t have an explanation, I can’t believe there is an order from above telling refs to help them. Sooner or later someone would talk, but what explains all these calls that go their way???

Penalties 6-98 and 1-10. The 1 for 10 was a meaningless hold on a kick off.
Obvious and clear hold on last run play for game sealing 1st down by Cheats.
Official congrats Brady on field after game. Official laughing it up with Pats after Pats score.

Walt Coleman somewhere Lit up a cigar after the game. I heard Riveron worked the NYC replay office out of a back room VIP area at Scores Strip Club in NYC.

The Jags had the best D in the league and had a 2 score lead in the 4th Q and coughed up 2 TDs and a game ending RUN play on 3rd down.

Cool story, bro.  There are 10 other conspiracy threads still up that you can bring this to.

There is bias. There is favoritism. how much ?well that is always a great barstool discussion isn't it ?

there is a betting line.

 simple stuff really

yes. yes it is. mind boggling.
money rules the world.
and it is what drives the NFL.
Goodell works for the Owners. Not all owners are created equal.

conspiracy? hmmm. maybe not.
But the game is entertainment now. Not to uphold the values of Fair and Sincere  Athletic competition.
if you are not willing to admit that the game is tailored to revenue then i would be surprised of you Alpha.

I didn't say that the game isnt about revenue and entertainment.  Thats actually exactly my point.  The NFL is big big big big business now.  And while they care about their image and revenue, they are 1000000000000% not telling the refs to rig the games for the Patriots and risking all that money.  Goodell works for ALL the owners, and none of the owners are asking Goodell to help the Patriots get to the Super Bowl.  Its without question not happening.

But yes, I do totally agree that the game is about entertainment...but then again, 100% of all sports are about entertainment and always have been.  If the game is not entertaining people dont pay to see it and they make no money and it goes out of business.  See all other failed sports leagues ever.

Jags D played dirty and the PI calls were appropriate.

The better team won the game.

The better team did not win. The better, smarter qb won. I’ll take almost every position player the Jags have over who the Pats* have any day.

If no flaga where called on either team and the pats won. The majority would blame the refs. Its 2nd nature

There's no conspiracy. The refs don't huddle before the game and decide to go easy on the Pats. But every dynasty in sports ends up getting the calls. Same thing with the Chicago Bulls in the 90s, Michael Jordan never got called for anything. He pushed off a defender for his game winning shot against the Jazz, no call. It's a psychological effect of being on the same field as the GOAT. Especially when the game is at home, the refs are going to subconsciously call things in the Pats favor.

This exactly. Nicely put.

More, I had to watch that play in slow motion like seven times in order to figure out there's no way to be sure that Jack wasn't touched after he got possession. Couldn't blame anybody for getting it wrong, and there's no way to know if this was in fact wrong.

But in plenty of other cases, yeah, superstars and great teams tend to get calls. In every sport, and especially at home.

No. There absolutely was - and is - reason to whistle a play dead if you think it's dead.

Allowing the play to be reviewed is in effect making a call that it was not down, that it was a TD. Which would then not be reversed if there wasn't conclusive evidence.

If they're not sure, they're supposed to let the play go on. If they think it's down, they're supposed to whistle it dead, and for good reason.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/01/22/quick-whistle-may-have-robbed-myles-jack-of-a-fumble-recovery-touchdown/

There's a reason that all the stories on this say "may have" robbed them of a TD. There's no conclusive evidence. The official is supposed to make the call he sees.

The only thing that article puts in perspective is what the writer was looking at.

5) The "questionable" delay of game call was correct. Just watched it on Game Pass in slo-mo. It really was delay of game.

4) The play this thread is about.

3) Brandin Cooks Pass Interference call - that article calls it a tough call against Jax. Not even close, it was obvious as all getout. The announcers for good reason totally agree with the call.

2) Personal foul on the Gronk hit. The article says it looked OK. Puh-leeze. Clearly helmet to helmet. On the GIF that accompanies that one you keep hearing Romo say over and over, "Definite penalty. Definite penalty. Definite penalty." On to infinity. Ridiculous. That call was absolutely correct.

1) No penalties called on Pats O or D - well, this one is at least debatable.

That is why you let the play play on. Just like Tre White TD vs Falcons.

On review it would have been proven he did not have possession until no Pat was touching Jack.

Or as you have pointed out and proven by having to watch it 7 times and still can't tell, would have been inconclusive so call stands for TO and Jax has TD on return the refs botched.

I do not believe it is a conspiracy, but they get favoritism for some reason.

Refs showing Pats favoritism is like global warming.

We have clear and conclusive proof it is happening....we just do not know the cause.

PS: did you even watch that "game ending" run play. Are you talking about that one with a clear hold by Pats player on Jax who would have stopped that run 5 yards short of a first. With ref looking right at it. That one?

Holding calls are missed in every single game.  NE lost a SB to the Giants because of a hold not called, resulting in a twice in a lifetime type completion by Eli.

The whole sports world is complaining. media, fans, even players days after games,  which is quit a departure from the norm as players seldom say anything after post game light comments.

I saw a lot more questionable calls in the Titans game.  That may have carried over in people's minds to the Jaguars game.  The Jags only had six penalties (almost all of them were obvious) so it seems the refs were intent on letting the two teams play.

The last few years they started “revealing” commercials online days before the game.

Kinda wrecks the novelty of it.

But we’ll always have The Puppy Bowl!

Yeah very intently.

No fouls on Pats offense or defense. Very rare occurrence.

No. Letting the play go on affects the outcome.

If they had let the play continue that would have been the same as making the call that the player had not been touched down. Whereas the ref actually believed and saw the opposite.

The replays were totally inconclusive, so NY couldn't overturn, so you would have had an official who believes the play had ended and yet the TD would have counted. A bad result when the guy with the best view believed the opposite.

As I pointed out earlier in the thread, the refs are NOT told to let the play continue. They are told to call it as they see it. If they believe the guy is down they should blow the whistle. If they believe he isn't down they shouldn't. And that makes sense.

"The official who blew the play dead may have had a better view than the TV cameras of where Jack and Lewis were at the time Jack recovered the fumble, or he may have just assumed Jack was touched down because he saw Jack and Lewis going to the ground right next to each other. If the officials would err on the side of letting a play go, it would allow replay to fix any mistakes. But when asked about the play, the league office told PFT that officials are supposed to call what they see, and not let a play go just because they might get corrected on replay."

Personally I'm in awe of the Patriots, and it's insane to think they are about to win their 6th NFL title and go on another 3 out of 4 year championship tear like they did from 2001 - 2004.

Whether you love or hate the Pats, all fans should truly enjoy this because we'll never see something like this again in the NFL ever.

The play shouldn't have been whistled dead.  It wasn't even close in real time.
