Pushing the sales tax even higher to 6.9 percent would raise $237 million in the second year of the two-year budget. The options also include raising the conveyance tax on real estate sales, imposing an excise tax on e-cigarettes, hiking the hotel and restaurant taxes, and restoring the sales tax on nonprescription drugs. The possibilities include hiking the cigarette tax again by 25 cents to $4.60 per pack, which would give Connecticut the highest state cigarette tax in the nation. The tax was recently increased to $4.35 per pack, which tied Connecticut with New York, in the budget that was signed by Malloy on Halloween. All taxing entities need to be very careful regarding increasing taxes or fees that have to do with real estate. Last I heard regarding the tax bill in Congress RE tax deductions were going to be limited. RE sales could go into a slump with that alone. Adding to it by increasing costs to transfer property could actually bring about less revenue by reducing transactions.

Tobacco shops where you roll your own on a machine that will produce you a carton in 10 minutes and are 1/4-1/3 the price of retail, only because loose tobacco is taxed differently. When the state legislatures all find a way to make them illegal then the Indian reservations will go nuts supplying people with their smokes. After that, well that's my secret.
