It's easier to keep one person in line than to make the rest change. I think if anything they may just have asked Tony to comment less, not for any purposes of dumbing down. The play by play guy should do most of the talking, and the color guy should comment when something interesting has occurred not on every routine snap. I'm sure they are thrilled with Tony's knowledge of the game and it would be silly not to put it to use. Less is more in a two man booth however.
