Berlin had 3 of these monster flak towers during the War; there are many throughout Germany/Europe. Vienna has several beauties. They are still there because they are literally indestructible, made from steel re-enforced concrete. They tried to destroy them after the War and concluded it was not worth the effort/expense. There are reports from the Battle for Berlin in which the Russians brought up their biggest guns and were firing directly into the walls of the Flak towers from ridiculous ranges, like 75 meters...line drives. These were monster shells and they were just bouncing off the walls. There are many little pock marks in the outer walls from those shots. The Earth is currently covered in man-made stuff that is going to be here forever. It might end up overgrown, but it ain't gonna fall to dust. The Colluseum and Flak towers are still around because the amount of concrete used was collosal (sorry for the pun :p) Same with Hoover Dam which is still curing Most of our modrn structures use the steel and concrete as the skeleton and fill in lighter materials with the rest . Once the skeleton buckles it doesn't take long to bring it down. Look at the towers collapsing on Sept 11. All the conspiracy nuts talking about how jet fuel won't melt steel, it does produce enough heat to weaken steel. When one floor collapses it's weight collapses down to the next, which collapses the weight of two floors down and Cascades down to the bottom

Actually, a good portion of the Colosseum is gone...not because natural decay, but because it was taken down for building materials in the immediate post-Roman empire era. The Flak towers...I think the French tried to demolish the one in their sector. The planted explosives barely even made a dent in it. The sub pens at Lorient, too...the Allies bombed the hell out of them, and leveled the surrounding town without damaging the pens. The pens were used by the French after the war, who figured they'd probably withstand a nuclear strike.

Just shows how much ancient knowledge is lost and forgotten. Gobekli Tepe has rewritten the history of early "man" - the rest of academia hasn't caught up yet. Egyptian history has always made the claim that their civilization was a legacy civilization, started after an even more advanced civilization fell. For centuries this was written off as mythology because there existed no evidence to prove an "advanced" civilization once prospered, there were no megalithic structures making this case... until Gobekli Tepe. (That is if you dismiss the Sphinx and it's mysterious age). Of course Gobekli Tepe wasn't just "lost", it was hidden by its builders. Buried, intentionally, to preserve the find for future generations. Human history on this planet is much, much older than we're told. In fact, you can make a strong argument that this fact has been methodically hidden from us by various academic institutions (The Smithsonian, British Museums etc) for decades. The question is... why? To answer that you have to go down a lot of fun rabbit holes. But it's amazing what lies at the end of the tunnel.
aceman_16
Thanks for the link. I dive and this TRULY would be a blast. The last time I was in Turkey was back in the early 1970s.... It is a COMPLETELY different country now vs back then.

My theory is the ancient human civilization had their own version of the Internet. The only way to completely erase all of their embarrassing web activity was to destroy the civilization that created it The Sphinx was carved after this destruction to remind humanity of the dangers of posting cat videos. 1

When one floor collapses it's weight collapses down to the next, which collapses the weight of two floors down and Cascades down to the bottom The WTC towers were not traditional steel-reenforced concrete structures. Far from it. They came down on 9/11 b/c they are designed with trusses, which are a long known achilles heel in a structure in case of fire. For that reason, trusses must be brought up to code with the application of fire retardant foam materials which must cover them. The problem on 9/11 was that the impact of the planes hitting the buildings transferred so much energy into the buildings, all the fire retardant stuff flew off the steel trusses, leaving them exposed to the flames and heat. You wait a while, get the heat to where the steel is happy to weaken and start to bend, and then the trusses fail. When the trusses fail, there is nothing there to stop compression forces from caving in the walls of the tower, and it collapses. It would be like knocking out the flying buttresses outside the walls on a gothic cathedral; once those are gone, the weight of the roof will cave in the walls and the structure will come down. Comparing traditional re-enforced concrete structures like the Flavian Amphitheater (what we call the colosseum) or the Berlin Flak Türme to the WTC towers is really misguided. No offense intended.
