Goff And The Rams Weren’t Supposed To Be This Good

By Daniel Levitt
The Los Angeles Rams had a 13 percent chance of making the playoffs at the start of the season and were projected to win just six games, according to FiveThirtyEight’s NFL predictions. When they improved to 7-2 with a 33-7 demolition over the Houston Texans in Week 10, the Rams exceeded our projected win totals and now own a 71 percent chance of making the postseason. You can forgive our Elo algorithm for being so low on the Rams in the preseason — they did have the NFL’s worst offense last year1 and didfinish on a seven-game losing streak as part of a 4-12 record. This season’s truly incredible transformation has taken place under the league’s youngest-ever head coach — Sean McVay, who was hired when he was 30 years old — and thus far, L.A. ranks among the best teams in the league (the same can’t be said about their fans though).

Essentially the same personnel we have here now scored 400 points last year.  The biggest change is not Sammy leaving.  Switching QB's is not going to get us back anywhere near 25 ppg.  We did the Buffalo switch-a-roo ........... every few years we switch offense for defense or vice versa and proceed to waste away picks only to bring in a crappy coach to coach them.

Probably leading for now anyways the coach of the year award. I have heard of a couple of their receivers before and they seem to be helping this years  Rams campaign. maybe McD will notice.

Hot competition for coach of the year with Payton and Zimmer as candidates in addition to McVay.

What was your bright idea at the time? Promote the lawn chair thrower to OC?

Please explain to me how Sammy Watkins is responsible for this success? Just looked at his stats not real impressive but I'm sure he is blocking well!

So right. Woods went via FA and Watkins was a trade.

This team didn't stand pat, especially on offense. The receiver corps was changed with the addition of Kupp, Woods and Watkins. Two offensive linemen were added in center Sullivan and LT whitworth. The Rams had a developing young qb in Goff whose game dramatically improved under a smart  young HC in McVay. Because the OL was upgraded their running game was enhanced with their talented back in Gurley taking some pressure off of the young qb.

In addition, one of the first coaching hires for the new HC was Wade Phillips as a DC. He is one of the best coordinators in the game. Wherever he goes the defense improves. He's one of the best coaches in the business.

The single most important reason for the Rams leap forward is their qb. The franchise gave up a lot of picks to acquire their franchise qb. Compare that to the Bills who have not had a franchise qb for nearly a quarter of a century.
