CountryCletus Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I just wanted to see who out there has had any experience with eating venison, cooking venison, hunting deer, picking up roadkill, etc.... if you have eaten venison, what are your favorite ways to eat it, and if you don’t like it, how did you have it? 1
SlimShady'sSpaceForce Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I used to hunt. Not a big fan of the gamey flavor. Friends used to make sausages but I disliked that even more.

The Poojer Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 i'm not a hunter but i love when my hunting friends give me some of their venison, not experienced with cooking it, but i would imagine the earlier alluded to sausage would be very good
Augie Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I’ve never had venison I really loved, but a place near us has a great elk dish. I had a taste of my son’s, and would have stolen it from him if he couldn’t kick my arse!

sherpa Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 The deer where I live in VA are only grass fed. The venison is excellent. It used to be the favored meet of European royalty. We don't "hunt," we merely choose to grab one of the many deer that roam our property, and there are plenty. We don't eat bucks, only does, and head shots to keep the meat from getting blood on it. Just one or two a year, but the backstrap is excellent.
Alaska Darin Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Most venison is "gamey" because the average hunter doesn't process the meat properly. There are other factors (especially the animal's diet) but proper processing, soaking, and aging will remove gaminess, regardless of the type of venison. 1

RaoulDuke79 Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 I'm of a big fan of the back straps or tenderloin filets with some butter, garlic powder and pepper.

My brother in law does a venison carpaccio from the tenderloin that is damn near the best thing I have ever eaten. Olive oil, salt, jalapeno, not quite sure what else, but damn is it delicious!
